    Hi Everyone.

I'm just wondering if .any of you ever experienced Anemia and how did you fix it... My hemoglobin count results have been a little under and a little over 7.0 for 2 months...Normal is 14.0...

The hospital checked for blood in stool and none there.... I had several blood transfusions and my count would go to 9.0 but back down in a few days...

They gave me ferrous iron, but I've read that excess iron is bad for the heart especially in men.... I got some iron fortified breakfast cereal and drink orange juice with it. I'm hoping in 2-3 weeks that I'll have some strength. . I had diahrea for 8 straight weeks 24/7 from all the medicines they gave me and all my nutrition was drained out of me.
Now I get exhausted in 2 minutes doing anything.... I gotta get stronger.... anyone have experiences with anemia.? Thanks, Willie..

Look up MCV and MCH - these are the Size of the blood cells - there's something to do with if they're normal or low, the anemia could be from iron deficiency.

But if they're high, could be caused from folate (greens) or B12 (beef) deficiency. But if the hospital gave you iron we would hope that's what the problem was...

I had a chart I had printed from Life Extension. Don't have a link. Labtestsonline is also helpful.

Hope you get your strength back soon to roll those bones!

I would take the iron pills for at least two weeks. It's not excess iron if youre that depleted. Taper off after two weeks. Don't stop cold. I had to take them while I was pregnant due to anemia. I also ate liver (gross) and lots of spinach. The pills will definitely stop any diarrhea. Try to eat fiber as well.

Thanks Pea. I'm trying to cover both bases...... Normal daily amounts of iron for men are 8mg and for children/women 14-18mg. They gave me 325mg a day for a week and it messed up my waste highway even more...... all the medications loosened stools greatly, but ferrous iron can constipate...

My sister got me Total breakfast cereal .. it has 18 mg iron a serving. I'll try two to three servings a day for a while and Tropicana orange juice as the Vitamin C helps absorb the iron..

I also started taking again the Men's complete multi vitamin. It has a potent B Complex package including the B-12 in potent amounts. The only problem with B vitamins and Vit. C is they are water soluable so they are useful for 4-6 hours in our bodies and then need to be replenished...

My biggest obstacles are the Anemia, my right kidney killing me the last 2 weeks so I can't even bend and my crummy bed sores......

I offered my body to science, but they didn't want it...lol....

thanks for your compassion and empathy Pea.

    Hi Willie,
My iron levels always run borderline anemic - too low to donate blood but too high to be diagnosed anemic. So whenever I have any health issues that affect my blood or result in blood loss I go to anemic levels and have to supplement for a while until I get them back up to my normal borderline.
The ferrous iron they try to prescribe that I have to pick up at the pharmacy always makes me sick to my stomach and causes me issues. There are so many additives in them that can really disagree with you.
So I just buy iron supplements, which my insurance doesn't cover then, but I look for ones that don't have a lot of fillers in them. The one that works for me is called Sundown Naturals High Potency Perfect Iron and they have it at the grocery store. It's not too pricey to begin with and sometimes the store has B1G1F which makes it even cheaper. It's been several years since I had to take them but when I do I just get from the doctor how many mg they want me to take then I take the equivalent in these...last time it was like twice the dosage on the bottle.

Wickedwinner,,,pkspins,,, thank you so much. What I don't understand is that I've never been Anemic in my life. Always had energy.... I had real bad kidney infection during April and May with very strong anti biotics. Could that have made me Anemic...Just to walk from my bedroom to the living room with a walker and I have to sit right away. ...
I will check on those iron supplements with the least additives and eat the Total cereal and take multi vites..... It's hard to eat, but i'm forcing myself. everything tastes lousy from months of medication....

    thank you for caring,
    Willie

I struggled with anemia for years and couldn't take the iron supplements as they made me ill. Doctor encouraged me to start drinking. A glass of red wine every night, this did help some. Then we moved to the country and ended up on well water which is very rusty looking, no more anemia issues. Not sure if it made a difference or just coincidence.

You know there is a problem when your doctor calls your house at 7 pm and says your blood work came back and you need to go to hospital NOW! Hubby had problems, so many tests, so many infusions. They couldn't find any internal bleeding but felt it was there. Old age, slow bleed. Anyway after 1 1/2 years Hubby ended needing a triple bypass. No anemia since.

Thank you, but this scared me to death... I can't do that surgery stuff, I'm all alone and hospitals suck....

They did chest x-rays, heart monitor 24/7, etc while I was in hospital. hopefully if it was my heart they'd have seen it...

Quality of life can suck as we age.... Before I went in hospital, I developed infection in kidneys, but had no Anemiia.... After tons of medication and diahrea, I became Anemic... I was strong before entering hospital...

Not to scare you but they did upper and lower gi and found nothing. They did all sorts of heart x-rays, electro cardiogram, and more I can't name and still found nothing. He had a 6 week set of transfusions which helped but still count went down to just below 7. Hopefully your problem us chemical, that you can treat. Hubbies is fixed but it took a lot to get it done.

One thing to note Willie - the most common form of iron supplement over the counter is ferrous sulfate. That is only about 20% elemental iron so the typical 325 mg is not really 325 mg. As you wrote take it with OJ - you need the ascorbic acid to help it along.

If you are really iron deficient - it will take a while to get you back to where you need to be.

There can be plenty of conditions which can cause anemia not related to blood loss. Just with what you have mentioned here and there, kidney dysfunction and inflammation can be causes as well.

Thanks,,,,,,, I've been studying iron very intently..... My Anemia is caused by my kidney disease, but I still need to raise my hemoglobin level no matter what the cause. Normal is 14... Danger is less than 8, I'm at 7.....

ferrous sulfate iron has 65 mg of elemental iron but is tough on the stomach.... Carbonyl iron is easier on stomach but has 30% less strength.... Heme and non heme iron is about 65% less strength than ferrous sulfate....

I am taking a combination of all 3 and hope to get strenghth back, at least a little....... I'm doing my best with iron and diet to improve my #'s.....
