Is the MGM somewhat of a dive?

I have only been to the MGM a handful of times, but I remember the first time about two years ago excited to walk into the iconic MGM and the first thing i notice is there seems to be more riff raff in that section of the strip compared to the bellagio planet hollywood and down further areas. Walking into the MGM the entrances off the strip seemed rundown, the doors themselves looked pretty beat up. I couldnt believe it, this was the place that hosted some of the biggest fights I had watched on Pay Per View.

The casino seemed nothing special and the casino seemed kind of dirty, rundown, and nothing like i expected.

Did i have my expectations too high? Is it just me?

No, I'm with you. I think it kinda sucks. Spent time there about 4 years ago and haven't been back since.

I think it's still better than the "lower half" of mlife. Prefer the floor better than Mandalay Bay even.

I stayed there a bunch of trips in a row. The rooms are OK, but I didn't really like the layout of the casino floor that much, it kind of meanders in all directions. and it seemed like no matter what you're playing there's always a river of people moving past within a few feet.

Not saying a casino should be a peaceful environment, lol, but it seemed like a crowded zoo a lot of the time except very early in the morning, or in the HL slot room and just outside it. I know other casinos are just as crowded, but they don't quite feel like it.

I’ve been very disappointed with all the MGM casinos I’ve played in this year. They appear not be be updating their slot floors as they have in the past and they seem to have really tightened up their machines. I’m reducing my play their significantly. It’s kinda sad as I’ve played at their casinos for probably 15 years and really like many of the people that work there.

The one that feels like that for me is Paris. Every time I walk in there, I'm like this place is a dump! But other people don't seem to see it lol. Their change machines look like they fell off the back of a truck. They can't even do those right?
I have never been impressed with MGM, I thought it was supposed to be that way, a little better than excalibur but not like nice or anything lol. It's like space filler for the strip.

Agree and im not just picking on MGM, i was just expecting so much more from one of the most famous casinos on the strip. Actually most casinos from planet hollywood up to venetian arent great. Same thing with Planet hollywood, not impressed with it either. They keep their lights dimmed a little more than most so you cant see all the filth.

Your expectations are too high. Mgm is a lower tier property. Sadly most of the Caesar properties fit this bill as well.

I was slightly joking. I love MGM. They still have some of the best restaurants and still the nicest high end suites. They had some done good work on the bartops but completely killed those... need work in high limit slots. The pool is still one of the mist fun and with hakkasan and wet republic they attract some talent. It is a big place and has a large diversity of people which i enjoy.... which may not but up your alley.

I still love the place but it has a ton to do with the service and how i get treated there.

Yes and no. The skylofts and The Mansion are 2 of the highest end properties in my book. MGM is what you want to make of it .. which is why i keep coming back

Technically yes but if I added skylofts to circus circus would that change your perception of the casino

I like the MGM properties and the MGM Grand, but the doorway entrances off of the strip DO seem kind of shoddy and worn. They get worked, for sure 24/7.
The pedestrian traffic from across at Park MGM/Trop/NYNY and down from City Center, in addition to the traffic walking/meandering/loitering/circulating down from the retail strip section just north, adds to this.
A lot of hustler/lookie-loos after 10pm or so when the lines for the clubs start to stack. Restrooms inside, too.

    My very simple two cents is that the MGM Grand is a "Hub" for a ton of pedestrian traffic at all hours of the day. Large parking structure at the back of the property; The last (south) stop for the monorail;
tons of rooms, not even including Signature towers; Big gaming area; some very popular nightclubs/pools; and tons of restaurants.
It really is big, and not that easy to navigate.
Going back to the 1990's, the place has been reconfigured big time at least twice. Probably a lot of inefficiencies could not be avoided in doing so.
My walk this spring from Park MGM to Top Golf for first time to watch sports felt like it was an hour. Walked through the whole property, and had to ask for directions twice, despite the signs.

Agree with B.C.Tuggle ...I'm a bit of a Phobic...SO MUCH pedestrian traffic lookeylooing the Renowned MGM.(Wasn't it fabulous 25 years ago!!!) I need my space. When I used to play blackjack I had a bit of a time playing with sooooo many people walking the aisles. I need an exit strategy. (phobia)...so I only go there now if I have to bring someone to a show. Won't play there.

Not even the same discussion... it would change my perspective of MGM Resorts management.... but not even a realistic comparison.

I've stayed at MGM and few times and enjoyed it, but it's been quite a while since I've even set foot in there now. I think the last time was when Lion's Share Progressive was still a thing. I can't speak to whether it's looking rough, but I do know that the size of the place makes it annoying for me to navigate, and the only time I've ever felt legitimately scared by someone approaching us was on the bridge between MGM/NYNY. One of those CD guys yelling and threatening when we would not take his CD.

Perhaps we will make a trip down there on our upcoming trip, for old time's sake, and see what we think.

I've never stayed at the Grand but plans are for that to change in February.

I think a lot of the "wear and tear" comes with it being such a high-traffic casino. The Casino floor itself is nice, albeit huge, and the dining options are second to none on the Strip.

I think others on the thread have mentioned this but, this being a message board and all, I'm putting in my 2cents regardless, even if I have nothing new to add.

To that point, I've noticed wear and tear at Bellagio in the recent past. Anywhere that gets that much traffic is going to have that challenge I suppose.

It is a very dated property and much of the clientele is sketchy. As much as I love staying at the Skylofts, there is no escaping the fact that you're still at MGM Grand except when you are on the Skylofts floor..
