So there's an increase up to 8% positivity rate and the casino reduces down to 25% capacity, yet here in Ontario with our 0.4% positivity rate (and it's been there for many, many weeks), our casinos still won't open at all, let alone at 25%. SMH.

But also why Canada's numbers are doing much better than ours. But yes, I think Canada could reopen casinos with limited capacity with a small risk. If they are concerned about mask usage while playing, they could ban all consumption indoors like New Jersey did, and now Harrah's Joliet for the time being.

To be clear, in our area of Ontario the casinos have been "allowed" to be open for going on 9 weeks now. But we have these somewhat arbitrary limits being put on things - the one affecting casinos here is the hard cap of 50 people in the building (including employees) regardless of the size of the building. Frustratingly, that's inconsistent with most other businesses where it's based on square footage, and inconsistent with restaurants which is based on I have no idea what (went to a major chain restaurant for our first meal a few weeks ago - every table was in use and full). Even cinemas were given an exemption to consider each screening room as a separate room with the 50 limit per room rather than 50 for the entire building. It's just casinos that can't seem to get a common sense rule put in place.

Most of these limits that people are putting in place are nice round numbers like 50 or 100, but they are really arbitrary and in some cases not practical. To give an example, I'm involved in the youth sports industry and youth hockey is putting their plans in place right now. There's two nice round numbers that are currently in place here in Ontario - 10 which is the maximum size of a roster (9 players + 1 goalie), and 50 which is the maximum cohort size of any "league". What that means is to maximize the cohort size of a league you'd put 5 teams in it. Well, 5 teams from a scheduling standpoint is horrendous to work with and extremely inefficient. So allowing the cohort to be 60 would make a massive difference and not add much risk since the cohort isn't in the same place at the same time. These limits are understood to be important, but the actual number that they set them at doesn't seem to have had much thought put into it.

Illinois was hit hard by COVID early, and while I cant say I disagree with all we are doing here to limit the spread, I will say it is a shotgun blast for the policies they put in place.

Indoor shopping malls had no limits. But things like outdoor Flea Markets were classified as carnivals and fairs, and weren't allowed to open at all. Not even in a reduced fashion.

You can have 10,000 people packed into an indoor mall, no worries. But not 51 people wandering around an open air market.

Not that anything surprises me in 2020.

With that said, I spent the night at Harrahs Joliet a few weeks ago. Board on a Friday, I checked for rooms at 6PM at night. Plenty open, and comped, why not?

Lost over a grand playing slots, in an empty casino, in under an hour. I felt pretty disappointed in myself LOL

Interesting. Hopefully something like that doesn't come to pass in Vegas -- you couldn't even open the doors with 50 people at a Vegas casino, let alone welcome guests.
At the risk of over-commenting, this is the case in a lot of places. I fully support restrictions, but for example, the thing in NV where bartop dining wasn't allowed but table dining was didn't make much sense to me.

And now Illinois has upped the ante again. Casinos and bar gaming closed indefinitely. Bleh. But I still have online sports betting. Or if I want to drive to Indiana.

Horseshoe Hammond going non-smoking is going to bring in all the Illinois gamblers who need a fix.
Southwest is selling tix to vegas for 45 each way from MDW.

My buddies were trying to get me to go there Thursday. Didn't realize they were going non smoking though.

Rates can be way cheaper than that too, one of the guys who wanted me to go Thursday just got this on Frontier I think :mindblown:

Hammond and all Indiana casinos were forced to go non-smoking. All consumption (food/drink/smoking) on the gaming floor has been banned by the Indiana Gaming Commission to comply with Gov. Holcomb's executive order. This was independent of Illinois's decision to close. I personally don't mind the non-smoking part myself.

We did the same thing on a Sunday night. Stayed at the Blue Chip, since Four Winds wont let anyone under 21 into the hotel. We just wanted something to do with the kids, to break them out of the prison we call home.

Cable TV, a new bed to jump on and room service, made for a happy Grid clan for the night!

It was a ghost town. I do like the bracelet thing. It was so stupid I had to go through the slow checkpoint every time I went outside for a smoke. Cutting back in with that hunk of plastic made it easy
