New York New York is the best of the pre-triple crown race songs and it's not particularly close.

That's three pretty exciting Triple Crown races, and me betting them all horribly was the only constant.

One last thought: I'm not real impressed with this year's 3YO crop. I'll be fading them against older in the Summer/Fall/Breeder's Cup races.

I was playing off work wagering credits at Hawthorne last night. There was a recall before the race due to broken equipment..

The track closed the windows and didn't reopen the windows. I felt it wasn't fair cause clearly the 4 had no shot at all.. looked like he ran into the gate pulled up hard twice and expended a tom of energy.

If windows couldnt open I believe the horse should have been scratched.... here is the video for you all to see...

    June 16th race 5.

So I wrote a letter to the mutual director of the state, the chief steward responded.

Personally I dont feel what was done was correct and fair to the bettors [and not for the well being of the horse]. Also the starter missed broken equipment earlier. While the Steward assures the letter of the law was followed...ethnically this situation was manhandled..... here is his response... pretty cool I got one, I didn't except anything to happen but I've never once seen a recall where windows closed... bell never rang and they closed it too early...

The horse in question, #4 Lous Paisano, broke as the horses were coming to the gate for the fifth race the first time. Then, less than two seconds before the start he broke his overcheck. A breaking horse will not necessitate a recall unless interference is involved. There was none. However, broken equipment does require a recall. Our starter saw the equipment break and hit the recall button approximately one second before the starting pole.

Hawthorne, and most pari-mutuel tracks have a double blind system for closing the windows. The Chief Steward has a button as well as the Mutuel Manager downstairs in the 'tote room'. Since the recall lights went on an instant before the start, both buttons were being pressed simultaneously and the windows were closed. By law, once they are closed they cannot be reopened.

Lous Paisano, being a two year making his pari-mutuel debut, was obviously flustered by this turn of events. His trainer fixed the equipment and the starter called the horses again. Unfortunately, Lous Paisano made another break behind the gate, but did not break equipment or commit any other act that would cause another recall. If he had, we would have declared him a late scratch and fully refunded wagers on him.

The management of Hawthorne had nothing to do with this sequence of events. I agree that it was a lousy outcome for you, but all Illinois Racing Board statutes and rules were followed.

    Yeah I agree.

He followed up to me saying I believe a scratch was the best course of action.. [still do]

But also left me with a nugget that shows he isn't 100% happy with it.. I appreciate the transparency and time taken

"The state veterinarian looked the colt over when he returned to the paddock and deemed him fit to race. He had a couple of minutes to compose himself and both the trainer and driver indicated they thought he would be okay. That is the proper procedure in these incidents. These were two year old trotters making their first pari-mutuel start-- a risky betting proposition. I would like to see these races held as non-wagering events until the two year olds have more experience."

If the trainer/driver thought he was good to go too, not much you can do there. Unfortunate for those that bet on him.
