It's more complicated than licensed games. Dancing Drums and Rising Fortunes at MGM Springfield (to use a local property I can cite accurately) are specialty games, as is Ultimate Fire Link. But the Lock it Link variations aren't. Mighty Cash isn't. 5 Treasures isn't. Aside from a few obvious ones (Bond is definitely specialty in Vegas, for instance) there's not always a rhyme or reason. I will say at Springfield you can see the coins remaining when you put your card in, and if it's more than $3 you know immediately; it's not as clear in Vegas where the systems don't give you the same level of information so you have to watch when it credits your next point and how many bets it was.

Note that they're not changing the Tier Credit earnings rate, just the express comps. So you still earn 10 tier credits per $3 (non-specialty) or $10 (specialty/video poker) in Vegas (and a lot less elsewhere, which just makes it more confusing). The points you earn are also unaffected from the looks of things, so the points for comps/pointplay are the same. It's the Express Comps only that are being made less clear.

It's worth noting Mlife is extremely complicated because there's three numbers - tier credits, points, and express comps. Most companies just have two, like Caesars Rewards only has Tier Credits and Reward Credits. There's some that feel that makes Mlife's comps more generous as you get two pools of comps to contend with, but at times it also makes it more confusing.

I was wondering what happened to the Tier Discount rooms on the mlife web site couple weeks back. I guess now it makes sense. Tier discount rooms really helped me because I go to vegas for work too and I sometimes just use the tier discount rooms instead of the gaming offer. Especially if I am traveling with friends and family. Sigh.... another push to other properties.

Naturally, I just made Platinum when they decide to make this change. It really sucks all the things they are doing to save money (even in Aria High Limit, they've gotten rid of coasters- how much could that save???), but MGM still has the better portfolio. If only Wynn bought Cosmo, then maybe someone could mount a challenge, but Caesar's certainly can't right now especially.

They got rid of coasters? They still have those at Lift Bar, for crying out loud.

I'm just glad that Sage still has the copper mugs for Moscow mules.

To be fair, I took a few of them once for my brother as a housewarming gift. Heard stories of a few high rollers taking loads, but who gives a crap when the minimums are $100 there? Now they just have nice napkins... hope they don't get rid of the hot cocktail waitresses.

Love the bar at Sage- bourbon selection is on point.

They pay almost nothing for those. I imagine there's a reason beyond simple cost-cutting -- if you look at the paper straw thing, for example, I've actually been told that those are more expensive than the plastic ones, but they good PR on the environmental protection side (and the bigger companies are legitimately into social responsibility).

Yeah you would think since they can reuse the coasters it might be more cost effective than napkins, but who knows. Just cheapens the feel when I'm trying to feel better about dropping a grand or two in 20 mins.

The coasters in Aria HL weren’t there in May when I was there last. I’m not surprised, oftentimes too many people using it as a cigar lounge, and not for actual players, and they were probably stolen.

Now, if they start serving me drinks in plastic cups there...

Sadly, those aren't going anywhere any time soon. It's not just a money grab -- they have to pay licensing fees for those games, which can get pretty significant, so the "specialty" part is a way to make sure they're still profitable.

I admit, I never play slots, but I couldn’t resist playing the Casino Royale/James Bond one and promptly dumped $20. So finally got me haha.

I don't understand the complaints on this thread? I have never paid a dime for a room at Aria so I'm wondering why many of the platinum level players are complaining about the change in express comps - when there is no change to the Vegas property calc - it is to all properties outside of Vegas. I'm certainly not worrying about my express comps because my food is usually completely written off on my trips.

I frankly got to Platinum status via spending and gambling, so I don't get everything comped off on my trips. I'm annoyed by the change in room discounts, as it helped reduce the costs of my trips a good bit. Agreed about the express comps changes - doesn't really matter to me, since I mostly just go to Vegas properties.

The Express Comps earnings calculation in all markets (including Vegas) is going from a clear, stated earnings rate to an opaque, unknown one that will likely vary based on the game's house edge. Your offers won't change, but the Express Comps you may apply to purchases above/beyond the comps would be affected. Hope that's clear.

The calculation model was introduced initially on the East Coast but is going national as of October 1. This information is per their announcement:

Interesting that it was introduced already on the east coast. Was in AC last week, played for a bit at Borgata and was very surprised at my accruals. Much lower express comps earned than I expected.

It began at Borgata, actually, because the comps earnings there was always different (for many years MGM and Boyd co-owned it and ran it as a joint venture, so it only joined Mlife a couple of years ago). They left the earnings rates much the same post-Mlife conversion, so it's always been a bit weird compared to most of the others. When they opened other properties on the east coast, they seem to have adopted that model.

I've found you earn comps about twice as quickly both there and at MGM Springfield (although Borgata had coin-in minimums at last check which forces you to play enough to actually begin accruing them), but they also make you spend them 2:1 at a lot of locations to water it back down. But if you save them and take them to a market like Vegas, you get more mileage out of them.
