A bar in Lansing is linked to 170 cases and that’s when Michigan bars in some regions had to shut down.

Hope the travel ban is lifted soon but it’s kind of weird over here sometimes.

 

100% in this camp. Closed bar tops would potentially be the make/break point for me if I had another near-term trip planned.

And agreed on the mask-wearing indoors. We got so used to it last week that there were several occasions we made it back to the room and forgot to take off the masks for a while because we were so used to them.

 

On my recent Vegas trip, masks were universal at all Stations and Caesars casinos. I saw very few folks with "lowered" masks, except when smoking or drinking. Smoking is not a big deal with the very effective HVAC systems combined with social distancing (which pretty much every buddy was doing). Those drinking tended to kept the masks lowered and no one seemed to be reminding them.
The bars were closed, but lots of drink gals wandering around.
Sure wouldn't keep me from going back.

 

One would assume, now that Nancy Pelosi does not have to wear a mask the mandate will be lifted.

 

Well you know what they say about the word "assume" does.

It's certainly disappointing to see the attitudes out there about masks and how it's been made a political statement, when in reality the mask is only a part of an overall strategy to slow down - not eliminate - viral spread. The best option has always been, and still is, avoid prolonged close contact with other humans (regardless of political party). And because a virus can live on surfaces, frequent hand washing and cleaning. Where masks come in and can be useful, are situations where prolong close contact can't be avoided (some scenarios) and/or constant cleaning isn't possible (all scenarios).

In the context of a casino, it's unrealistic, and expensive, to ensure that everything that is touched is constantly cleaned - and it's unrealistic to expect that every gambler is constantly washing their hands. That doesn't mean don't do those things - its very important that they are done. The goal is to get the risk as low as possible, understanding that zero risk when interacting with other humans is essentially impossible. Masks further decrease the risk - they don't eliminate it. But again, just because zero risk isn't possible does not mean we shouldn't be doing anything and everything to decrease risk.

Reducing crowds is still the best option - the extreme version of which is to be closed entirely. But advocates of closing everything tend to ignore the negative consequences of doing so. Casinos, like all businesses, exist because humans like to go to them. The more tools in the toolbox being used to reduce risk, the safer it becomes to patronize those places. Not 100% safe, just safer. Not using a mask in any area where other humans are, or might be, is less safe. Not 100% unsafe, just less safe.

All humans, republican or democrat, leader or average Joe, should be motivated to reduce risk for themselves and others by doing everything they can. Along those lines, anyone who intentionally does not do everything they can to reduce risk deserves at least some criticism. But it doesn't provide justification for others to intentionally act in an unsafe manner either.

 

and don't forget the NV Gov - enjoying dinner and listening to a live band... and no mask either... breaking his own rules about live music. They do not seem too concerned about what is going on... hmmmmm.....
