Which Paiute course is long as fuck? Whatever one that is sucks lol

I ruined a pair of golf shoes on that one trying to get a ball from what I thought was a dry pond bed. I sunk like a dude in an 80s film quick sand scene

Wolf. I’ll play the 6,400 yard tees. So funny I recently had a ball just trickle down this slope into a creek bed and could see it but said it’s not worth a twisted ankle and left it. We don’t look hard for balls, and these are all Pro V1x. The little guy lost 4 in 2 holes yesterday. Hence the $3,000+ golf ball spend over the past year. Life is too short. It’s like 2 quads on $5 Boner Deluxe.

Here is the golf expense since we left for Phoenix after last Thanksgiving, for me and the kids:

    Capturegolf.JPG

Only $3,600 spent per stroke of handicap decrease. And $129 per birdie. Ha!

I switched to ProV1x this season after you spoke highly of them on your report. I can definitely feel the difference, and I’m getting about 10 more yards with the driver. Better spin too. Worth the extra $1+ over the Bridgestone e6 I used prior.

That's awesome!! I hadn't really ever believed it made THAT much difference until I made this particular switch. I would always play Titleist's but I hadn't considered a specific model fitting my swing per se. I'm losing a lot less now that the boys are in school. I will lose 2-3 in a round sometimes, but then go 54 holes with one ball. I made it 67 holes last week, and by the time the ball was pretty beat up and dirty anyway!

CLEARLY, you’re a lot better golfer than me! Sometimes I’ll make it through 18 without losing a ball, but that’s rare. Usually lose 2-3 a round.

Like gambling, a very streaky game.

I am learning to save a lot of strokes with course management and laying up. I can’t reach Par 5s very often in Chicago where it is wetter. I hit a low drive which rolls out so in Phoenix on desert courses I can reach more Par 5s.

So now my goal is to avoid having 30 to 70 yard shots in by laying up. A lot of Par 5s if I hit two decent shots I have 40 yards left and I’m screwed. Plus the fairway woods are high risk. If I can hit 3 wood, 7 iron, wedge it’s a much lower risk than driver 3 wood awkward partial pitch.

Another thing I do now is shoot towards the fat side of greens, making sure to avoid bunkers. And playing to the middle of greens depth wise if between clubs.

Stuff like that has been helping me save some strokes and avoid doubles.

If I can avoid doubles I’ll usually have a hot streak somewhere in the round and end up with a decent day. Occasionally I will have a day with a really good feel or in the zone putting. Overall I prefer to play scrambles. But I still have fun even on the really bad days. I try to only remember the good shots.

Scrambles are my favorite too. Even on a not-so-great day, I’ll hit a few good drives or second shots and feel like I’m contributing to the team. I agree hitting greens in regulation is the key to the non-disaster holes. How often am I gonna hit it next to a short-side flag over the bunker? Nope…lands in the bunker, then blast it off the green and end up with a 7.

I did hit a high risk shot over water today!!!

So today was a very good day. On Tuesday's I normally drop off Seany at school and go straight to the course. There is women's league so earliest tee time is 9:58 so it's a solid practice session. Did NOT sleep well last night and practice session was total garbage. Dr Chipinski I was not. Was getting like 1/5 within 10 feet on chips. Driver was all over. Putting was questionable. Everything else 3 wood-wedge was decent.

Head over to the first tee and its a total cluster fuck. They have 3 open tee times between leagues and these are the only option really for me to get a round in on Tues/Thur at this course, which I prefer because it has a grass range, is walkable, and is close enough I can fit it in. Plus it is just a super fun and challenging course. It isn't long, but has a TON of water and OB. So those 3 tee times 9:57, 10:06, and 10:15 are always a cluster fuck. One is always the off duty rangers and starters. And usually the others are a random mix. Some other employees and whoever.

So today it ends up like a lot of people are late and I'm in the middle group. So it is kind of a cluster of everyone on the tee at once and people waiting. Somehow I end up being asked to tee off, with like a dozen people on the tee box. It's also a tee box I've never seen off to the side which is totally blocking out my normal snap hook off #1. So I am forced to hit 3 wood, and actually first time I've hit this fairway! It was downwind, I crushed a high straight shot which his the downslope and rolled out. So that kinda set the tone for the day.

It was pretty windy so ballstriking was tough, but I had up and down for par on 4 of the first 6 holes so that was super nice start and then started hitting greens. Best of all---it was a net positive golf ball day! Didn't lose any and found one 2021 Pro-V1x, fairly new!

But one hole I fucked up the layup and semi-shanked a 5-iron tee shot under a tree just short of the water. I was actually blocked out from chipping back to the fairway so my only real out was over the water, long right of the green. Tried to hook a punch 8-iron but it was a flyer lie and just went long right past everything, but wasn't a bad pitch back. Did bogey the hole, but hey--I went for it!!! :)

haha---totally---i avoid bunkers at ALL COSTS. It's a guaranteed train wreck for me. I could literally play scrambles only for the rest of my life and be very happy!

    Bought some NFL tickets today:

Buddy of mine just messaged the chicago golf chat about how he decided to skip the practice rounds and go to the opening round of Ryder cup on THURSDAY . I didn’t have the heart to reply it’s a 3-day tourney starting Friday.

So we crushed the competition at the scramble yesterday, guys got pretty drunk, one guy after went off, I wrote a post in the reddit golf cheating thread about it, I'll just copy and paste here:

"I've been playing with a group of about 20 guys for a few years, the game is a team scramble format, with par 3 closest to pins, and a blind skins scoring system with no carryovers.

These guys drink quite a bit and there have often been heated discussions and negotiations/calculations after the rounds, I never paid it much mind.

Today, it was only 8 guys, so 2 groups of 4. The teams were a little tilted towards our opponents, who played in front of us, but they must have had a pretty bad day, they shot 71 in a 4-man scramble. They actually shot +2 front and -3 back nine, so just a bad nine really.

We shot a normal 33 on the front nine, and on the back a little worse 35, just missed a bunch of putts.

At the end, while doing the scorecard comparison the best player on the other team says "No way you guys parred 16. I saw you short in 2, chip to the back of the green, and miss the putt". We all thought about it and recalled our shots, and the one guy hit second shot from 144 yards to about 35 feet long, back of green. We all missed the birdie putt, hence par. There was no chip from short. No one even had a shot short at the front of the green. This guy was pretty drunk and we figured out he must have been confusing with the previous 15th hole, Par 5 where we were just short in 2, but failed to make birdie.

In any event this guy continued to go on and on about us cheating. Then when we tallied the score he said it didn't matter, since we won by 2 anyway so it wouldn't change the payouts. We all refused to accept the payments.

If you are going to accuse someone of cheating in golf, you better be right.

This leaves such an awful taste in my mouth. Easily solved, these guys aren't my main friend group and it is no big deal to exit the group permanently. But damn. What are people thinking?"

I’ve had couple times even my own teamate having bad day and starts calling out my shots more then worrying for his own. We have a guy who very new this year and has gotten way better and they didn’t believe he and I were in spots in two shots. Mind this course is fair avg to short I think for length so when I have a safe shot to play in a scramble I can let it rip and drive most greens here obviously don’t play that way on my own as sometimes I drive other holes greens if I miss lol

    Yep--sounds VERY familiar.

From 2008-2019 I played golf 0-3 times per year, and just restarted with these guys like once a year, and maybe once on vacation.

Then Covid came, my sons wanted to learn to play golf so since this time last year I've played 130 rounds, practiced hundreds of hours, bought custom clubs, and dropped 11 strokes in handicap. We have a different mix of the 20 guys who actually show up every time, and it's always within a hole or two. They play kind of a fucked up format team scramble skins with no carryovers and Par 3 closest to pins.

Normally a 4-man scramble with a good team you need about 60 to win. These teams are made up of usually one guy who can shoot upper 80s, one guy who is mid 90's and a couple worse guys. It would normally be won with upper 60's/low 70's. So its an easy game. And they have adjusted the teams slightly since we've won the past few times, taking away one decent guy with a really good short game and giving us a guy who we used literally ZERO shots this round.

Also the Par 3's are the same money as the overall game. You had to hit the green, then closest to pin has to 2 putt and you win $5 from each guy.

It's a bit annoying to get accused of cheating when you win a f'ing 4-man scramble with a trash score of 68-71 and win 2 of the par 3's as the only person hitting the green out of 8.
