At the end of my trip a couple of weeks ago I went to the concerige and purchased a stupid amount of gift cards to get to gold LOL. I was specific to ask whether I could apply them to my final bill for hotel charges and was told yes. We have an anniversary trip planned for next year and I've already booked an upgraded room (can't wait to try a wraparound!!) the gift cards will be just enough to cover it. So for 2 gold nights and 2 companion nights for my parents it was a no brainer to get the cards.

Confirming what @YOleven said, yes this is the way to do it. Buy your gift card well in advance, email the confirmation receipt to Identity to get the points, and pick the gift card up at concierge when you get there (it seems to help to show that you're booked already for a specific date). While there, charge everything to the room - you'll get the points again for all your spend when its charged to the room (as long as it's beyond any FB offer attached to that stay). Before checking out, go down to the front desk and have them use your gift card to pay for all the room charges to that point first, then use any Identity RC you have (you'll get some just by purchasing the card itself, plus all the stuff you charged to your room will accrue more RC), and then after all that's done just checkout as per normal and anything remaining will get billed to your credit card.

Getting double points on resort spend keeps us within the Gold tier pretty easily, although with our gambol we probably would have gotten there anyway (just not easily). If we were ever going to take a stab at Platinum, this would be the way to get there without breaking the bank.

As a question to anyone who has purchased a gift card in person at the concierge and submitted the receipt (again, in person) for points at the Identity desk, has anyone experienced a situation where the representative questioned earning points on a gift card purchase, or had a situation where you haven't received points toward the full value of the gift card? I've bought gift cards in person a few times, and when you purchase a gift card at the concierge, your credit card receipt is actually printed on a ticket stub. The first couple of times after I took my receipt to the Identity desk to request points on my purchase, I received points for the entire value of my gift card purchase. For example, if I bought a $200 gift card I received 1,000 points, if I bought a $300 gift card I received 1,500 points, and so on. However, when I did this last trip, I noticed a day or two later that I was credited points only for the value of the gift card minus about 8%. So, if the gift card was for $300, I received Identity points for only a $276 purchase. The ticket stub receipt from concierge doesn't display an itemized total, so presumably the Identity representative deducted sales tax, assuming that the purchase was for show tickets.

I didn't press the issue, but I'm curious if anyone else has run into a similar situation. I've never been told by an Identity representative that you can't earn points on gift cards, but my guess is that it might be a YMMV kind of situation. Perhaps the better option is to order a gift card online and email the receipt to Identity to request points, as there hasn't been any mention in this thread of issues with earning points when submitting a gift card receipt by email. On the other hand, I do know that many times my emails to Identity have been answered by the same representatives that I see in person at the Identity desk, so maybe it doesn't matter.

The last couple times I've gone I had issues where everything seemed to be registering a bit off. I'd spend $80 at Holsteins and the total on my points was $68. It's definitely not you. One of the people that helped me at the Identity desk said that he's noticed a lot of people coming up as their missing some points.

Does purchasing a gift card count towards keeping your identity points from getting wiped out? I don’t think I’ll be there for a year and trying to save my $200 in points. Thanks.

Yes. You can order online and then submit the receipt to Identity and you get credited for the purchase.

I did it last year to bump myself to gold which allowed me to use my 2 gold nights for a trip I knew was coming up.

Sorry to revive this thread, but:

Looks like there's a 50-50 chance I won't be going again until next summer. Last trip was in mid-January.

Can anybody confirm that once they submitted their gift card receipt, that they got Identity Points (ie. points usable for resort credit)? Pretty much everybody here was trying to make tier, not sure if anybody noticed whether their resort credit-type points also got posted.

I'm assuming yes, but I don't think anybody specifically said they saw their Identity points go up.

I don't care about the tier points, but I want to keep my spendable points alive past Jan 31 of next year, which is the date they've set for expiration.

    Thanks...

Yes, both times we purchased remotely the points and the resort credit appeared right away.

Same here, and I'm glad I made the purchase earlier in the year (to make Gold tier)... once the points hit my account, the 2 Gold comp nights appeared. Then, another 2 comp nights were added due to the casino "closure bonus".

It was a no-brainer to do it for the waived resort fees* in itself, since that money is gonna (and did) get spent there anyway. Perks!

    * 4 paid nights in addition to the 2 comp Gold nights, even though Host comped off 2 of the paid nights on the back-end. Charged everything to the room, used points (from GC purchase and play) to clear off some, and then the Gift Card for the rest.

I'm sure regretting my HUGE gift card purchase on my trip last October in order to reach gold now. At the time it was a no brainer as we had a group trip for our anniversary planned for June. This got me companion rooms for my parents and 2 extra gold nights for us. We had upgraded to a wrap around with adjoining one bedroom for them. So it saved us a ton of money and we were going to use the cards to pay for the upgrades/cabana/food, etc.

We are going to start getting dinged in maintenance fees on the cards in a couple more months. Wish I had just done a single card but I was nervous doing one for some much money so I spread it out over a few cards and now we'll get dinged on each one. Ugh. Worst thing is that I really don't know when we would ever be able to return. We have health issues so are taking things very cautiously and being from Canada even when the border finally opens unless the insurance companies start covering COVID again someday I just don't see us travelling.

@Marilynfan, with the way the world has turned upside down, I consider myself very lucky that I was able to travel to Vegas (and use my Cosmo GC).
You did what you thought was best at the time, to make the most of your planned trip... and it really stinks that all that has happened has left you with a very real loss that was in no way your fault.

Maybe you could call and they would extend the “ ding” date to a later date due to Covid? Never hurts to ask :)
