So, wife and I walk up to chandelier bar tonight, both put players card in with $20. I help my wife pick a game. Bartender (I think his name was Mark) asks what we were having. Old fashioned for me and Mr. Miyagi for her. I throw $5 in the tip cup for him to show him we are there and know how the system works. He brings them back and tells us he can comp my drink but not hers and asks if we want to start a tab or close out. I asked him, “why didn’t you say that when we ordered?” and his response blew me away — something to the effect of, “now I gotta explain to every single person what I can comp and what I can’t?!” Um, yeah. You do. That’s how this works. Literally every bartender I have ever had at Cosmo or any other bar in Vegas has told me what they could comp and not comp, and how the comp system works.

I pointed out to him that we had that drink comped before and he said whoever comped it was risking their job.

Long story short, I told him it was bullshit and to take the drink back if it was a problem. He took the drink back, and I took my tip back. We both cashed out and bailed.

I was really disappointed in how the bartender handled the entire thing. I told my wife I wish I had handled the interaction better, but given how rude and dismissive Mark was, I don’t think I could have done much better under the circumstances. Anyone else had any similar experiences here? It really turned me off from ever returning.

I’ve always been told upfront if I’ve ordered something that won’t be comped...

Same here - I think he was stupid to think you should be a mind reader.
Unless it is posted big somewhere - or he tells you - how would you know.
He was out of line for sure. I have always been told. He must have been
having a bad day - they are usually so nice there. Oh well - there are lots
    of other places to enjoy.

He def should’ve handled that better.

Unfortunately most specialty drinks now fall $1 or $2 beyond the official Comp value of the drink tickets these days.

I think they will comp the specialty drinks with 2 tickets?

Anyway dude was totally out of line. I’ve a couple assholes like that in the past, some to the point of writing and email via total rewards or contacting social media accounts.

    Agreed on both counts.

If Cosmo isn't going to comp the specialty drinks, then that's on management and not the bartender's fault. But it's not an issue of the policy here, it's how it was communicated. Part of their job is explaining what can and can't be comped.

And maybe I haven't played there in a bit, but at most VP bars, the bartenders still have at least some discretion. If they don't give that to the Cosmo bartenders, that's unfortunate.

Definitely should have mentioned it before making the drink. That's comp bartending 101 TBH.

Yup. I was playing at Bond one afternoon and asked for an old fashioned with Bullitt. He said immediately he couldn't comp Bullitt but could make one with Four Roses instead. Also mentioned that the first would be a comp, anything beyond would require a drink ticket from my play.

I prefer playing VP in HL where they just give me what I want and don't have to worry about the tickets lol. Then there's no doubt if I'm actually getting a comp or maybe being charged

Also why you get dividends from getting to know the bartenders. There are definitely places I play where there's theoretically a policy in place, but the bartenders/managers know me and don't care. I've had days when I've been playing VP and gotten fancy drinks comped for a friend and I right after walking up, while the guy next to me is being told he can only get one well drink, once every 30 minutes, and needs to put money in the machine first.

Absolutely. Bartenders and cocktail waitresses are your friends! A good rapport can go a long way

Also now you can cash in multiple tickets for a higher end booze if you’re not able to swing HL bar level play. Being in good with bartenders is priceless as well. I’ve got go to people at the Cosmo sports book bar on all shifts. Maybe I go too much......

Sorry to hear that--there's no excuse for that kind of treatment. I hope that Cosmo staff are empowered to make appropriate exceptions to policies, especially in situations like this... if they are, then all the drama could've been avoided. The drink was already made. Just give it away. I'm certain a happy gambler is going to be generating a lot more revenue for the Cosmo than someone upset.

FWIW I've found the Cosmo bartenders to be very accommodating and happy to explain the comp system.

That's weird, Bullitt isn't even a premium bourbon. It's on par with Four Roses imo.

That's what I thought too, they had plenty there I'd think would be more premium than Bullitt so I didn't even consider that I was asking for too much lol

It'd be one thing if they just didn't have it -- which would be odd, but I've found that some casino bars are quirky about what they stock. For example, a few places at Aria don't stock Stoli (which you'd think would be pretty standard, though they do stock Stoli Elit). But if they would comp Four Roses but not that, it's annoying.

So, now the question is: should I contact Cosmo to share my experience or just let it lie? Other than this isolated experience, we have had great, friendly bartenders at Chandelier and Vesper.

For me, I would forget about it since you didn’t pay for the drink. I think the bartender learned his lesson. Life is too short to worry about things that really don’t matter in the big scheme of things.

This happened to me on my last trip as well... I had to open a tab for my gf's first drink, but the bartender did explain that I could pay for it with tickets before actually taking my card (and gave me the opportunity to return the drink). It was mildly annoying, but I didn't think that big a deal. And not to excuse bad service, or suggest they shouldn't suffer the consequence of lost business, but literally every time I play at the chandelier there are multiple people trying to scam the bartenders by putting in a $20, getting a drink, and cashing out (many don't play a single hand). Half the time (including my last trip), they actually get into it with the bartenders and berate them when called out on it. This problem seems much worse at the chandelier than any other bar I play at for some reason; I'd be pretty annoyed if I had to deal with that all the time too. Given the otherwise generally positive reviews, the guy probably just had a bad day or something. I wouldn't try to go over his head here, more of a vote with your feet situation in my opinion, for what it's worth.

Also, I know there's a historical custom of getting free drinks at VP bars, but I don't think it's unfair for casinos to treat them like any other back end comp (i.e., order what you want, play, then see if you earned a comp). Other than the historical practice, what's the difference between this and an unknown player walking into a casino restaurant asking for a comped meal?
