I had to Google what a bollard was but sounds like a good idea.

Glad to see it finally happening. I actually felt uncomfortable walking the stretch between PH and Paris last trip!

According to a quote from LVRJ, they can withstand a flatbed truck going 55 mph.

There was a time where cabbies were hitting pedestrians on a super regular basis. Terrible.

Well seeing people crossing when they shouldn't I can imagine! Someone last trip almost got blasted crossing from bellagio to Cosmo.

Coming down that valet enterence to strip cars are moving quick and pedestrians don't follow light/ or don't see cars

When I first started going to Vegas there weren't pedestrian overpasses at all. Crossing LV Blvd on foot was pretty much a free for all. Seeing people get hit by cars was unfortunately a common occurrence.

The lack of a physical barrier on many parts of the strip has surprised me anyways.

What makes me nervous are the people crossing the Paris driveway against the redlight. Especially when it's people with walkers or strollers. It's red for a reason.

Maybe the reason is that some people require a certain shade of red before they attempt to stop.

Part of the problem is that the Paris walkway, among others, are unpredictable. Here in NYC, I cross against red lights all the time, because the cars are only coming from one direction, and if you don't see a car coming, then you're safe. That's not the case at many Vegas crossings (another one that comes to mind is the one in front of the south entrance to Bellagio, just past Cosmo), where there are left turn arrows, cars coming out of tunnels at high speed, etc. It's confusing enough for drivers, and if a pedestrian isn't paying attention, it's a recipe for disaster.

Honestly, I think these are a great idea, but I'm less worried about terrorism than I am a drunk/distracted driver.

What stopped them from doing this before? I always wondered why they didn't have these.

Nothing "stopped" them, per se, but it's a pretty massive expense (as mentioned in the article, they have to close down lanes of traffic and drill down underneath the sidewalk). And unfortunately, just because it might be the right thing to do, when there's not necessarily any financial benefit to it, doesn't make it something most corporations and municipalities are interested in these days.
