Unless you actually know the payback percentage that's programmed into any given machine, there's no way to know if newer machines payback more or less than old machines.

Also, with any slot machine, you can't tell anything about payback based on the pay table on the glass. So the older WOF machine with a $10K slice doesn't mean it payed back more in the long term than a new WOF machine.

Finally, the casino can only pick from available payback options that the machine manufacture provides. So within the software of the slot machine, there's "games" with each game having it's own payback. Here's an example showing the "games" and available payback percents from an IGT AVP machine:

The higher top prize could be more indicative of higher variance. Two machines with the same programmed hold percentage but different top prizes will have difference variances. With a high top prize a lot of the overall return is tied up in that jackpot.

I think agree with you about the attrition method - pushing older slots at higher denoms out in favor of the mega sized penny machines, And more volatility via the game rules themselves plus more games with multiple levels of progressives. Means people will bust out faster. It's getting harder and harder for me to find slots I'm willing to play, it's down to two or three machines in some places.

About the WoF top slice $10k vs $1,199 - I doubt that it's as simple as "swiping" $8,801 off the payout. Could be that @bayoubengal is right that it make the game more volatile, or it could be that either the $1,199 and/or other slices hit more often in that configuration. I think there was a thread not too long ago where we kicked that around for a bit.
