It's happening! It's happening! It's happening! I get to update the title of the thread :)

Flight has been purchased as of tonight - at a crazy, crazy price of $273.86 CDN round trip non-stop. At least, non-stop for the moment.

Departing from Toronto on Tuesday, October 13 (b-day) at 8pm, which gives me enough time to "party" with the wife and kids (aka eat breakfast), have lunch with @Mrs2BOBCATS and get on my way. Arriving pretty late at 10:30pm. Then two full days at Cosmo before coming back in the morning on Friday the 16th.

Just under a month to plan out the rest and solicit more "virtual group pull" suggestions from more fellow VF'ers (thanks for all the suggestions so far), and to plan out the logistics for my quarantine upon return. So excited.

Well that was short-lived. Air FU Canada just cancelled the flight. And because they're claiming it's due to circumstances beyond their control (yet there are still flights to Vegas available, albeit with TWO stops) it's not eligible for a refund.

Time to start searching for a flight to Detroit I suppose.

Brutal! Sorry to hear that. @Royal Flusher didn't name them "Air FU Canada" because they have a long track record of taking care of their customers. This proves it once again.

    Is Westjet an option?

Unfortunately not surprising given the extension of the border closure. Same thing happened to our Westjet flights to Vegas next week and believe airlines will continue to cancel direct flights to Vegas until restrictions are eased.
Assume AC is just offering a travel credit like Westjet did for cancelling your flights?

Westjet's flights to Vegas (all of them) vanished about a week ago up until November 4 (day after election, I wonder if it's related?). So no, Westjet is out.

I'm on the phone (on hold) with Air Canada right now, which is better than this morning where when you called them it was just a message of "we have so many calls right now we can't even put you on hold". I'm going to argue that I should get a refund since 1) I booked the ticket about 32 hours before they cancelled it, and 2) I booked it on Sep 15 because they were having a special sale that ended that day. So that's pretty deceptive, at best. I'm not expecting them to do the right thing, but I'll feel better about making the argument.

My official options are to convert it to a travel voucher that "never expires", or convert it to Aeroplan miles with 65% bonus miles for going that route. The problem is that neither one of those would be available in the next 6 weeks so even if I were to rebook the 2-stop, 14-hour marathon flight which is the Toronto->Vancouver->Los Angeles->Las Vegas trip, I still would be paying full price for it and having to use the voucher on another flight sometime in the future. Kinda crazy, and borderline criminal. Assuming I get to talk to a human at some point, and that human tells me I'm not getting a refund, then I'll probably take the non-expiring travel voucher since I'm assuming those miles probably do expire.

But I do have good news.

I've re-booked on Delta. Flight goes Toronto -> Detroit -> Vegas however it's a 45 minute layover in Detroit (both ways) which is just enough time to get off the tiny plane with my carry-on and board the big plane with my carry-on. Downside is that I paid $911 CDN but if I take a step back and do some gambler's rationalizing, that's still quite a bit cheaper than "normal" - and it's on a better airline with more strict seat restrictions (no middle seats on Delta, whereas both Westjet and Air Canada are filling their middle seats at the moment). The tiny plane from Toronto to Detroit is actually a 2 X 2 plane to begin with and I had the option to take the seat on the side where the other seat is empty.

Technically the flight times are better since they get me to Vegas about 2 hours earlier than the AC flight, although it does mean I'll probably have to leave the house quite a bit sooner, and most likely miss out on birthday lunch with the wife before going which sucks. On the way back it's about 1 more hour in Vegas before leaving, and 2 more hours before getting home; both of those are fine by me.

How frustrating. But, I did read that bars will reopen Sept. 20. When you get there, that’ll be fun!

Interesting. If the Cosmo Sportsbook or Chandy are open I'll definitely partake if they're not too busy, but I was good with just hanging out on the floor too. Meanwhile, here in Ontario we're rolling back - meaning adding more restrictions for covid. It's like we're on different planets.

The call with Air FU Canada was for 1 hour, 5 minutes and while the lady I talked with was super nice and friendly, there was nothing she could do in terms of issuing a refund. They'll be holding my $273 hostage, interest free, until I book with them down the road. Although it's also transferable so maybe I'll put it up for sale later :)

I just googled $911 Canadian. Good Lord man and you have to pay for baggage? At least it's going to work out for your birthday. That's great news.

This is why pre-covid when faced with a 3-hour drive to DTW and a 2.5-hour drive to YYZ we would always go to DTW. Usually half the price, not to mention doing the customs thing at a land crossing in Port Huron makes the flight itself domestic, so less time in the airport. Toronto is just known for being an expensive airport for the airlines to use.

I told you Air FU Canada would cancel!!! They didn’t offer you YYZ-LAX-LAS? When they cancelled my flight in August I almost did Delta YYZ-DTW-LAS but because it’s a west jet affiliate I’d have to pay for that flight and take a credit with AC. Don’t worry you will make it to Vegas!!

Tip of the hat to you for making your 40th happen as you intended.

I don’t play slots but I’ve got a play request.
Every time you hit a hand pay off one of those 40 $100s, you chant “stand up and fight!”

Wowza!! What drama your having to go through just to get to Vegas for your bday!! So sorry it’s been a journey thus far... BUT the 3 hours extra is a win already and with everything you’ve endured so far..... your owed a handpay or 10 :)

If Delta cancels, your last option will be to hire a coyote to smuggle you across the border (both ways) in order to get a flight out of Detroit (maybe the Canadian version of the coyote smuggler is a wolf).
