Hi all! Been absent from the forum for awhile for a variety of reasons. But I'm going to be taking my annual spring trip to Las Vegas in just under a week, so seemed like a good time to pop back in and catch up some.

This will be my longest trip to Vegas - and my smallest gambling bankroll. I'm going for an event during the one weekend I'm out there, but the rest will be working half days remotely, which was a great way to slow my roll a bit last year, and to bounce around a bit and just enjoy some Vegas time.

To try to pad my budget for Vegas to the best of my ability, I'm being more organized about the offers available and how I'm leveraging them, having learned some good tips from a few friends who are amazing at figuring this stuff out. I also have my Las Vegas Advisor and American Casino Guide, as well as my selected MyVegas rewards for the trip.

    My itinerary will be:

    Luxor May 27-29
    PH May 29-June 3
Luxor June 2-5 (overlap of a night as Sunday's going to be busy and so I don't want to be rushed checking out/in).

Some of what I've learned, and will be testing on this trip, will become content for a new website I launched last week, which is part of the reason why I've been not as active here.

The biggest change for this trip, as I've moved an hour further from New York City and am now not very conveniently close to any of the big airports without paying a lot of time (via mass transit/shuttle options) and/or money (parking my car) to get there, is that I'm flying from a tiny Connecticut airport that only does three flights per day with an American Airlines affiliate, connecting to Philly, and then going cross country to Vegas from there. The price was barely higher than a ticket from New York, but the ability to Uber to that airport in 12 minutes and have maximum 49 people (the planes are 50 people) in front of me in a security line means it should be pretty simple. Bonus points given I'm flying out on Memorial Day.

    IMG_0815.jpg

I also secured my favorite seat discovery from last year again (photo above; hello 23F) on both of my longest-leg flights in both directions for $29 each way; best $6/hour I could spend after basically reaching my limit with these pitch reductions in recent years. Being tall is great until you have 30 inches of legroom and a person pushing the seat back as far as they can.

We're now within 72 hours of departure. This is probably the first time I've ever wished for a weekend to hurry up and be over with. But no need to race there.

I've established a pattern with my previous four Vegas trips to do something new each time. Obviously with only four visits that hasn't been too tough, but as I spend more time there, and do more things, I like to still make sure I have things on the potential "new to me" agenda. Examples for this trip include:

--I have a ticket to the "Love" show at the Mirage; this will be my third Cirque show, having worked my way through the free MyVegas options :)
--I have wanted to ride a roller coaster in Vegas; just before the age of 30 I began a shift from having a healthy fear of rollercoasters to having a healthy excitement of them; in March when I went down to Tampa for a cruise, we detoured to Busch Gardens for a day and I jumped on five of them during the visit. I heard the one at NY-NY is rough, but it's the bigger of the two and nearby Luxor. But I also have never visited Circus Circus, which also has a classic Arrow, so another potential option...
--First visit to Circus Circus, SLS, and/or Westgate? (A friend of mine who visits Vegas somewhat regularly gifted me for the holidays a 5-day monorail pass for this trip - very kind - so getting up there won't be too tough.)
--I've never been inside any Madame Tussaud's but I got a free ticket from MyVegas and I'm sure it'll be an OK way to spend a bit of time when I want to do some non-gambling exploring. I also have spent very little time in V/P, and although I don't think that will change this visit I'd like to explore a bit again as it was a beautiful property.
--I've only been downtown for a few short visits, and still haven't really had a chance to truly explore, so I hope to spend some more time down there too. I have only been inside half the casinos, so I'll want to at least peek inside some I've missed.
--Although less likely for this trip, I'm still interested in checking out the Neon Museum, the Mob Museum and the Pinball Hall of Fame. Perhaps one of these gets checked off this trip.
--Perhaps check out the new Wynn shops and browse more places I won't be spending money :)

Aside from that, my core reason for the visit is to meet up with a group of people who are part of Brian Christopher's fan club (good eye @aprilroncincy ); last year's event was a lot of fun and had the great side effect of basically slowing down my gambling to near zero for 48 hours because of all the activities going on. Since my bankroll is smaller, this could be helpful so I have a bit more budget on the remaining days. For that group I'm also organizing two unofficial group pulls, and we'll see how it goes!

All of the above aside, I've got a couple more days to go, so in the meantime the packing has begun, I've largely gotten everything I need organized, and I just need to make it to Monday :)

By far my favorite Cirque show in Vegas. It's not the most impressive from a technical perspective (O has better acrobatics, and the set at Ka is ridiculous), but if you like Beatles music and want to see some cool circus acts, it's amazing.
It was terrible when it opened, but it's far, far better now. I've ridden it a few times and always enjoy it. I believe a few years back they replaced all the trains and re-did the tracks. It's certainly not what you're going to find at Six Flags Great Adventure or Cedar Point, but it's pretty cool, and the novelty of going through the casino is pretty cool.
Speaking as a Vegas history nerd, the Neon Museum is amazing, and the "Brilliant" show is excellent. Haven't been to the Mob Museum. On Pinball HOF, if you do want to go, just make sure you call ahead and ensure they're open. They're supposedly in the process of shutting down the Tropicana location and moving to a new spot on the way-south Strip. I haven't been following it that closely but do know that things are a bit in flux.

All great stuff - thank you! If the roller coaster is indeed rough, it'll be over quickly enough that I can make it through ;)

Love is also our favorite show by far; so hope you enjoy it!

We’re not too impressed by Westgate, SLZ or Circus Circus, but do enjoy The Steakhouse at Circus Circus very much! A good value as well because your sides are included with the price of the steak.

Definitely go downtown again if you have a chance!

    Good luck at the event!

    Have a great time @joshj!!
It sounds like your agenda has plenty of non-gambling activities to keep your BR from dwindling too quickly... or you could just get on a hot streak and play to your hearts content!!!!

    Best of luck!!

I am definitely going back downtown - I've got the LVA and ACG books and I'm not afraid to use 'em ;) I actually have a lot of fun there and all three times I've opted to go downtown I've had some sort of good win story (including my first-ever handpay). So I will be getting over there for sure!

Let's hope for a little of Column A and a little of Column B :)

I've used an envelope system for awhile (loved how you handled yours so well, btw!), so that'll also ensure I can't go nuts on a given day. But having other things to do helps a lot as well, and at least in Las Vegas there's plenty of things to catch your eye and occupy you when you can't or don't want to gamble.

If this is your short trip, hiw long is your long trip? With so many things to do and plenty of lovely distraction (I am talking about slots!) time does fly supersonic at Vegas. Have fun and good luck.

Thank you! My trips have been getting longer... this is a 9-day, and last year I did an 8-day, and if my planning continues as expected in December will not only be the first time I go to Vegas twice in a year, but that one could be 10 (!) days.

All my vacations have been on the long side recently; for awhile I was happy with doing long weekends frequently, but in the past year or two I've been working remotely and just going places for longer. 10 days between the cruise and Tampa in March, 9 days starting tomorrow, etc. I'm very fortunate to have a job that lets me work remotely so I can also choose to not take as much time off, but still get to enjoy an area for a longer period.

You know when the emails come that it's time to check in that it's nearly time to head out:

I checked in to Luxor on the MGM app - I have no idea what that does for me. Does that guarantee my room? That helps me given my late night arrival time. But idk if I still have to visit the front desk or not - last year I did out of caution.

When checking in to my flight on American, they offered me an upgrade to first class for the first, (far) shorter first leg of my flight for $47. I took a calculated risk and upgraded, hoping that having a first class leg to kick off the trip lets me avoid the checked bag fee (if so it's $30 saved for $47 spent, a $17 difference for Group 1 boarding and more space/legroom to kick off my trip - awesome!). Any AA fliers know if that works out or if I'll be stuck paying $30 more tomorrow? I don't mind either way but at that price it was worth giving it a try haha

We're into the final countdown - getting excited! But I need to finish packing...

If the app gives you the opportunity to use mobile phone key, then you don’t need to stop by the front desk. Otherwise you need to stop by mobile check in area to get a key.

Awesome! Great to confirm one way or the other. I land late in the evening so if I can skip a step and head straight to my room that would be lovely! We'll see what happens.

The trip has been pretty eventful so far! I departed from the Tweed New Haven airport, a tiny one near my place. Got there in 15 minutes.

I saw the plane that was taking me to Philly land! That was sorta cool.

My first class upgrade trick worked. So I not only checked my actual checked bag but also my overhead bin bag. Less carrying around!

As I went to go through security they mention taking the laptop out of the bag... and as I go to grab I I realize I did not pack it. I had been charging it before leaving and forgot to put it in my bag.

My partner was off of work yesterday so I gave him a call and thankfully he was able to drive it over in time. If I was heading to another airport it would have been a lost cause so that was lucky!

Between being close to the apartment and how fast you can get from curb to plane I will definitely consider flying from there again if the pricing makes sense. So much time and hassle saved!

We took off early to Philly and landed a half hour early. Now I had 2.5 hours to kill so I spent part of it walking from Terminal F to B. Might as well get some exercise!

I grabbed a bite, waited to board and headed to my extra leg room seat. I was the only one on my side of the exit rows on a half full flight, although a couple of people were allowed to move in after takeoff.

The flight to Vegas was uneventful; landed basically on time although at one point they had predicted a 30 minute late arrival.

My first class tags also raced my bags to the luggage drop so I was off the plane at 11:30 and at my hotel by midnight. Luxor did push my key to the app so no check in desk but I did have to ask how to get to my room as it did not specify which tower on the app :)

Opted to do a half hour of low rolling after finding a snack; had one nice mini hit on Mighty Cash.

And that was my travel day! Already got going today and into my work obligations for the day, but will do a morning update after that.
