This trip makes the 10th anniversary of my first trip to Vegas. The same group of guys (more or less) have been coming out this same week every year. This year our group is small (3). We haven’t ever really had a big win hit but we usually don’t lose either but I feel like someone is hitting something big this year.

I arrive Tuesday the 13th at 3 and one member is already on the ground. He (C) encourages me to hurry up and check into the Flamingo and get to the casino bar at Margaritaville. I have arranged a taxi to be waiting, bypass the cab line and I’m at the Flamingo in no time after catching up with my favorite vegas cab driver. Check in is quick and I’m offered an upgrade to a Go Room with a strip view. Not ideal since C and I are sharing a room but I take it. Drop the bag off and head to 5 o’clock somewhere bar.

What I arrive to is a madhouse related to their happy hour from 5-6 where they have Miller lite drafts for a nickel. There is a line and security and an empty seat right next to where everyone picks up their drinks that is reserved for me. C has befriended a large man from Arizona named Pancho who is there with his girlfriend. I am quickly informed that if we heckle those who attempt to pay in change and not tip the bartenders, we would get free shots.

We only almost start 1 fight but after an hour, we are pretty buzzed. We hang around for a little while and say goodbye to pancho and his girlfriend who by now are our best friends. Our plan is to make it to Cromwell so I can look over the lines and play some video poker. We miss their happy hour by a couple minutes but I walk back to the sports book (it still has that new sports book smell) grab some sheets and a pencil and walk back to interlude. C has already sat down and I take a seat next to him. Within 10 minutes of being there and only in town for 4 hours C hits this.

The first ever handpay and vegas royal flush I’ve ever seen. I hit one on dimes playing STP in AC but it doesn’t count really. It’s also C’s first ever RF and we are stoked. I’ll update this over the next few days but I want to test out and make sure Tapatalk is working.

Once the last member of the group arrives (K) we head over to two peaks. Our upstairs bar is closed; rented out for a private party. We settle for the down stairs bar and develop a plan for the trip. After several cold frosty beers each, we decide to walk back through PH and play some craps. The table was kind and we each left up a couple hundred bucks. C called it an early night but K and I wanted to play Let it Ride. Stayed at PH and found a $5 table. K lost a few bucks and I think I ended up winning $10 or so. Then we walked back to Flamingo and called it a night.

    Wednesday March 14

See, here is the problem with March trips. Wednesday’s details are sketchy. Grabbed a quick breakfast at Eatwell in the Cromwell. It was really good. We started gambling early because it’s the only full day we’d have of gambling. We played craps at Cromwell and we all doubled up. Next we made our way to Harrah’s where we played for a couple more hours and also doubled up.

We ended up at Rhumbar at the Mirage where the sun was out, which turned out to be lucky as the weather was awful all trip except today. After a couple rounds of tatongas each, we walked through Harrah’s and caught part of the big Elvis show. This was my first time seeing him and he was really good. We wanted to play hangover slots at Caesars but they don’t have it anymore or we couldn’t find it. We grabbed lunch at Earl of a Sandwich. Also, at this point it’s about 3 and we are all pretty smashed.

After Caesars we head to cosmopolitan to try to take down their game of thrones machines. At Cosmo, the top prize is 1.3 million. At all the Caesars properties it’s only $10,000 so why would we play that machine anywhere else. I couldn’t win anything at Cosmo. Game of thrones, price is right, goonies. Actually, I did ok at goonies but that just meant I didn’t lose. I was down pretty big here which was made even worse because I hadn’t lost yet.

We wandered around and ended up at Margaritville casino. I played blackjack and won $50 or so. C and K played roulette and either won a little or didn’t lose much. One of K’s friends who used to play professional baseball was in town so we went to Top Golf to meet him and some friends. Top golf was pretty fun. Second year we needed up there and both times were great. Caught a cab and had them drop us off somewhere, probably flamingo and we realized we needed food. We ended up at burger brasserie or le burger as we call it. We were probably pretty obnoxious to everyone around us. It closed and we ended up playing at Bally’s some before calling it a night.

Thursday March 15 and Friday March 16.

Here’s another problem with March madness trips, the days run together. I watched every minute of every game and had money on every game (sometimes only in a parlay) but money on every game. As such, some of the events get confused in my head. But here is what I know or at least believe to be true.

Thursday was all day at Twin Peaks. Usually we do cosmos Hoops and Hops but party because we have been there every year they’ve had and remember when it was $50 a day and all you could drink, when they announced it was $225 plus taxes and fees this year, we were out. We secured spots at possibly our favorite place, the upstairs bar at Twin Peaks. We have a minimum spend of $100 a person or $300.

I have a bet every year on the first possible bet of the tournament, the first half over/under of the first game. I went under even though tre young is playing. I sweat it out but that bets ends up a winner.

There isn’t a ton to say here. We sat, we enjoyed the open air and view of Vegas, the other views and frosty 28 degree beers. This is the first time I’ve ever tried baileys and coffee and I’m hooked. I’m not a coffee drinker but add baileys and I’m in.

Here’s the aftermath, there’s another picture like this but with 3 shots if baileys and 3 coffees added to it.

We return to Cosmo in an attempt to take down the game of thrones machine. We don’t but K hits a nice bonus for about $1100. We grab some road beers and watch some Bellagio fountains. Sadly, the rest of the night is lost to all of us. We wandered around Vegas, watched basketball and drank. We called it pretty early but that’s all anyone remembers.

Friday started with all of us in different areas either running or getting bets in. I end up at Bally’s playing VP at Sully’s and ask them to put on the Marshall Wichita state game because I have Marshall on the money line. They give me the remote and for a while I consider myself the king of sullys. I’m flipping games based on tv timeouts. The guy next to me is from Minnesota and he is in town to see the wild play the knights. My Marshall bet turned out ok too.

We converge on Bally’s as last year we watched our beloved Mountineers at an island tiki bar in the shantytown outside of Bally’s. They have expanded and now have food but I want to get a chicken sandwich at blue ribbon. We notice that the defensive coordinator for our football team is at giordanos across the walkway for us and we get some “let’s go” “mountaineers” chants going. The tiki bar turns out nice for us again as WVU cruises. I had us as my lock of the day and had $110 on them but don’t have a picture. We have been drinking a lot and start our familiar trek up the strip.

We end up at the craps table at O’Shea’s. It’s $15. Shit. We eventually all elbow our way onto the table and everyone at the table gets hot. So hot they raise it to $25 to run the riff raff off. Well, turns out that’s us after they refused to grandfather anyone in so we take our leave each up somewhere between $400 and $600. C and K post up at a roulette table and I play some black jack at the Linq. At this point, we are again all very drunk. But it’s also the last day we are all here. Everyone but me leaves tomorrow. In the 10 years we’ve been coming, we’ve never all sat down at a nice-ish restaurant. For the first years we survived solely off of bacon egg and cheese bagels for breakfast and hot dogs from the bills hot dog carts. Our food choices were so bad our wives/girlfriends never once were jealous of the trip because we did, nothing but eat cheap food, drink cheap beer and watch basketball. We have since moved past only dining from carts but it’s still not gourmet by any means. Since this may be the last March trip we decide to break our unofficial rule of no decent restaurants and decide we need calimari and pasta from Carmine’s at the Forum shops at Caesars.

We are seated, order and I take a drink of water and am suddenly shocked at how drunk I am. I have some bread and it doesn’t help. At one point I stand up and say, “Well, I guess I’m going to throw up in the Carmine’s bathroom.” Luckily it doesn’t come to that but I nurse my beer and drink tons of water from what feels like the worlds smallest glass. I bet I had a dozen glasses of water but they were probably 6 ounce glasses. We reminisce about the old trips, the guys we lost along the way and the places we loved that aren’t around anymore. I don’t think we embarrass ourselves too badly and we leave Carmine’s.

We again take one more run at the Cosmo GoT machines. Doesn’t hit. We watch Virginia lose to UMBC at the Cosmo. No one had that bet although I swear to god I meant to bet UMBC when I heard Virginia had a player out with injury but was too drunk the entire time. We take in a Bellagio fountain show, walk around Bellagio and Caesars and call it a night, with K having an early flight out Saturday.

I’m solo for most of the rest of the trip. C flies out Saturday late afternoon but I’m switching from Flamingo to Cosmo and am staying through Monday so there’s still more to come.

Apologies for any spelling errors. Typing on a iPad is much harder than a real keyboard and I’m not proofreading this.

    Saturday March 17

With K leaving at 7:40 we are now a two man operation for Saturday. I wake up to a text that he made it to the gate but was hurting. I head down to settle up and apply some reward credits to the bill. Final total from flamingo for 4 nights and a $100 dinner from Le Burger was $501.

C and I make our way down to Cosmo. I try to check in at 10 on the Saturday of March madness and am shocked to find they don’t have a room ready. I tell the clerk that I wasn’t expecting one to be ready and check my bag. C only has a few hours left so I tell him to formulate a plan. We head to Bally’s to play VP. I hit this, my first premium quad of the trip. [IMG]

We make our way back to the Cosmo and play some slots and end up at secret pizza. He takes off around 1:30. I’m the last man left standing.

I go to the sports book to try to snag a seat. That’s not happening. I try for the tables around the area to gamble and watch. Also not happening. The whole place is packed. I settle for a seat at chandelier bar with a view of zero TVs. Wtf am I doing? There’s basketball on and I can’t see it. I tell myself I’m just playing until my room is ready. It’s 2:45 and still no room. I’m starting to get annoyed by the whole situation when out of the blue:

My first ever vegas royal and my first at quarters. (I hit one messing around with STP on dimes at Caesars in AC, but I barely count it.)

I sit there and soak it all in. I’m torn between playing immediately to get it off the screen so no one notices and leaving it forever. So for those keeping score, that’s everyone in the group with a hit over $1,000 this trip and 2 of those royal flushes when we hadn’t ever before hit anything that high.

I end up playing a little more and eventually get a text my room is ready. 3424 in the Chelsea tower.

I’ve got big plans for the rest of Saturday that involves downtown and lots of match plays.

    Saturday March 17th continued.

After quickly getting set up in the room, I grab a Lyft to Fremont. I have 3 $25 match plays at The D and 4 from the golden gate. None of these are from offers. The d ones come from 1 I forgot to use, one from the the LVA and one from their MM party. The d used to send me offers of 3 free nights a month, $25 food credit, $30 slot credit and a $25 match play. Now I get nothing from them. The last few trips I’ve used the offers, played slots for an hour or so and then played black jack at $25 a hand for 45 minutes to an hour. Not a ton but not enough to completely dry up I wouldn’t think. Also, during my last two hit and run bj sessions, I’ve at least doubled my buy in of $300-$400. Whatever the reason, I wish I’d get back to getting my mailers. I love getting Vegas mail.

First stop is the watch party at the d. It’s top notch. I grab some food and a beer and settle in. I always love watching the games here but since Dupars closed, the group never wants to come downtown so I wait to come down after everyone leaves. Eventually I feel the need to gamble and head downstairs. It’s about 4 and there is one $25 bj table that’s full. The rest are all 50. Wtf? Downtown was where we went when we couldn’t get a table downtown during mm. Now where are going to have to go, sams town? I do want to play at the d so I head to vue bar. Packed and no one looks like they are leaving anytime soon. Sigma derby, packed. New sigma derby, packed. Back downstairs, longbar, packed. Im starting to itch from lack of gambling. The place is getting more crowded by the second. I just want to get out of there and end up at a $25 roulette table to see if I can hit red or black. I hit 2 of them and leave up $125.

Next stop is the golden gate. Probably my favorite Fremont street joint. This place is also crowded but not as bad as the d. (Speaking my of crowded, the walk from the d to gg was awful. The most crowded I’ve ever seen it). I find a pretty empty $15 black jack table and sit down. I quickly realize why it’s empty. The dealer is brand new. The other guy there corrects her on a payout and taking his bet when he pushed, which are necessary but could have done more politely. He leaves and I play heads up for a while but I have had enough pretty quickly. I color up up about $100.

What I wanted to do with my winnings of about $200 was gamble it at the Cal/MSS or El Cortez, my favorite spots downtown. I only made it Call/MSS. I played some Treasure Chest but didn’t get any 4oaks. I also played some pitch black jack at the cal.

I end up at MSS and decide to have dinner at 777. There’s a line out the door which I quickly bypass, ask the hostess if I can just grab a seat at the bar and after getting the answer I hoped for, order some sort of steak sandwich. I need Kansas -5 for a $50 3 team parlay and Kansas wins by 4. Ouch.

I take a Lyft back to Cosmo, which because of some sort of surge pricing costs me $44. I dick around Cosmo on some slots and lost a little bit of money. Went up to the room and apparently the drinking and not sleeping caught up to me because at 12:53 I sent a text saying that every time I tried to focus on something it looked like the trailer from the movie “Split” so I went to bed.

    Sunday March 18

A Vegas first for me: I slept in until 9:48 Vegas time. The sleep was nice but I’ve missed the tip off of the first game. Oh no. But, this isn’t my first rodeo, all my bets were made the day before. WVU played in state rival Marshall today and I had entertained thoughts on driving down to San Diego to watch it in person. A Lyft driver told me I’d have to be on the road by 6 or 7 am or risk getting caught in the traffic from all the Californians heading home. I don’t know how accurate this is because the game wasn’t until 6 but it scared me off.

This is probably my shortest day recap. Much basketball was watched. Much alcohol was consumed. Many bets were made. I watched WVU crush Marshall and ate dinner at one of my few must haves every trip: China Poblano. I think I only had one picture of a winning ticket but I had WVU as lock of the day again. Please to enjoy gambling and food pics.

    [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

The China Poblano pics are a carnitas taco and the lucky 6. First time trying the lucky 6 and it was great.

I was out of cash completely in my wallet when the day ended as I only took enough money so that if I lost everything in my wallet I would be dead even after 5 days in Vegas. Not an awful place to be, even after 5 days in Vegas.

    Monday March 19- Last Day

My last full day starts a little late. I head over to Paris around 9:00 to see if the CET lines are better than the ones at Cosmo. Play a little VP at Gustavs and have a Baileys and coffee.

Then my walk down the south strip begins. I ha e several items on my agenda that lead me south. First: a bacon egg and cheese on an everything bagel. Second: a giant Hershey bar with my nephews picture on it from NYNY. Third: Check out the new Monte MGM. Or Park Carlo, whatever it’s called now. Fourth: cash in a $30 ticket from MGM I stupidly forgot to cash at top golf because, well alcohol.

Bagel mania at America at NYNY.

This $30 cost me at least 20 minutes of my day.

The Moneyline sports bar and book is very nice. I may be biased as I used to (still do?) do a sports betting segment by the same name on the 360 Vegas podcast.

Moneyline is really nice. I have to make a bet there so I sit down at the bar and play some VP.

The view from my VP seat.

    Booze menu at Moneyline

All of my tasks out of the way, I hit up the slots at Cosmo. No big hits but I did hit this at sharknado and made a gif out of it. It may not show up here.

I also take another shot at game of thrones but sadly it doesn’t give up its $1.3M jackpot. After breaking even I head up to pack and see how I’m sitting. I’m basically even after a week in Vegas.

After packing everything except what I need for the flight tomorrow, I head back down to make my sweet 16 bets. Since anything I win I’ll have to mail in, I lean more towards parlays. I make about $400 in bets and it’s about time for dinner. I’m heading to Zuma at Cosmo. I had the spicy beef tenderloin and some sushi. Also decide to try some old rip van winkle.

It’s 7:00 on my last night. I find a $15 black jack table and sit down for a while. I get up about $125 but a couple of guys have joined the table and are playing horribly. I take my $100 profit and leave shortly after someone hits a 14 against a 6.

I take one last shot at the slots. I had an offer from Cosmo where I get $25 free play and then an extra $50 if I earned 2500 slot points. I manage to to that and head to the Identity desk to get my $50. While there he suggests I talk to the host on duty after I’m finished playing since I hit that offer. I’m the smallest of small players and have never asked for anything off at the back end so I was a little hesitant. I took $100 and take one final shot at Game of Thrones and I make it last for a while.

I decide to use my free play and some of my point play in the high limit room. I load it up on a top dollar and promptly lose it all very quickly. I decide to go talk to the host on duty and find out he can comp off one of my nights that I paid $180 for. Sweet and it also saves me that nights resort fee.

I use my last three drink tickets for a beer and two waters and enjoy my beer on the balcony and try to figure a way to get back. Until next time vegas.

One story I forgot to include from is from the 14th. I love making the grand salami bet but it’s been disappearing form the strip. It’s the over/under for the total number it goals scored in all NHL games combined. MGM and CET casinos no longer offer it but I’d heard rumors William Hill did. I head to casino royale to find out. I ask the ticket writer, “Do you guys offer the grand salami?” The reply was yes we do. “Give me $20 on the over.” The ticket writers response was, “Don’t you want to know what it’s set at?” I said nope and my bet was made. The grand salami rides again! Maybe that should have been the title of this trip report. Also, the bet was a winner.

Great TR! Congrats on the Royals!

And the "grand salami" bet, I've never heard of it. Bit surprised they call it that too, but it's hilarious!

It sounds like we should have crossed paths! I was at China Poblana that Sunday and was gambling at the tables Sunday night. I can't say enough good things about hosts at the Cosmo. I am not a huge gambler but I was assigned a host and he is able to get me a bit better than what I can get by calling the reservation line so I do recommend you use your host to book in the future. Thanks for writing your report!

That first royal was my friends. I didn’t want people thinking I was snaking someone’s wins. But we did leave lots there for you. Cromwell is quickly becoming my favorite place to gamble.

We do get around a lot. With the exception of Thursday, we walked 15 miles or more everyday.

The name is half the reason we still bet it. I know very little about hockey.

Thanks. I wanted to post it here because I read most of the reports posted and wanted to give back although it’s no where near the value I receive from everyone here.

I’m sure we did and just didn’t know it. I should have consulted the calendar here to see who was in town. I like the solo portion but it’s also nice to talk to people too, which is probably why I like bar top VP and tables more than slots.

I don’t have a host, I just talked to the host on duty. I was looking to find a way to pass along on cosmos website about some of the Cosmo employees that were exceptional but couldn’t find anything like that. The Cosmo is my favorite place in Vegas. Just about everyone there was great but a few went above and beyond. I hope your trip went well.

    Final Thoughts

After 10 years, there aren’t a ton of new things we tried. Top golf was great and a fun way to spend an hour or two. We still love staying at the Flamingo. I love a hotel where you can get from your room to the strip quickly. The Flamingo was partially comped too. Th vacation portion at the Cosmo was great. Cosmo is my favorite place. Everything there is top notch. I paid $320 for Saturday night and the other two nights ended up comped.

Gambling was pretty good too. Although I was the only one to lose money, I was only down $300 after a Tuesday night to Tuesday morning trip. Sports betting was pretty good. I was up 3 of the 4 days. Played a lot of craps for us. Probably 8-10 hours and we hardly played Thursday or Friday. I didn’t play as much black jack as I would have liked. I think I only had 3 black jack sessions. I don’t think I lost at any of them so I should have played more. Also, all my future bets lost, in large part to my beloved Mountaineers not covering against Villanova.

During my walking tour of MGM properties Monday I realized I really like MGM properties but my offers took a dick turn after my December trip. I didn’t gamble at MGM at all this trip and I moved all that bankroll to Cosmo. I have received that Cosmo offer of $25 free play and another $50 if you earn another 2500 slot points in 48 hours. This trip was the first where I actually earned enough points so maybe I’ll see an uptick in offers from there but I’m still a very low roller especially for Cosmo.

Restaurant wise, it’s a bunch of old favorites: Earl of Sandwich, In-N-Out, Twin Peaks, Burger Brasserie and China Poblano are all great. Eat well at Cromwell was really good for breakfast. Carmine’s in Vegas is new but we’ve eaten there in AC before. America was good at NYNY and that was completely new for me.

Next years trip is very speculative at this point but we are holding out hope that is happens. I’m still trying to get out there before then. Hopefully this report was entertaining or at least helpful and please ask if you have any questions. I really appreciate all the information everyone here provides and wanted to give something back.
