I have a question to all the video poker fanatics like myself. Is it me or does it seem like the newer Game king machines don't pay as well as the older machines? I'm not talking about the pay table. I know it's a random 52 card deal, but it seems like I can go through a $20.00 very fast on the newer machines. I play a lot and I definitely see a difference. Curious to hear what you think.

You said it. It’s a 52 card deck. It’s the same. If it’s not properly random then the machine is violating the law and the gaming commission needs to know. So no, they don’t pay any different.

Greater sacrifices to the VP gods are required. I've stuck to chickens in the past but may have to upgrade to goats this year. Or are pigs next? Not sure, I'm not religious.

One caveat -- they can alter the pay tables, but it has to be as displayed. But otherwise, yes. I can't find the actual Nevada statute/reg at the moment, but the general rule is that any virtual representation of a gaming device (whether it's a VP machine, or video craps/blackjack/roulette/baccarat/whatever) is required to simulate a physical game. And $20 is a very small sample size.

This is the year of the rat so those are auspicious right now. Goats could work, though.

I hope the VP gods aren't Chinese bc then we are fucked when the year of the dragon rolls around...

Seriously though, I think we all just vastly underestimate how long the long run is and how a lucky or unlucky streak can seemingly last forever. OK, only unlucky streaks, but the principle stands.

Not sure I underestimate it any more... but come to realize I just don't give a fuck and just like to play and hope the short run is in my favor....

I am willing to chance it and sacrifice a rat if it would help. :)

Is there any possibility that newer machines have improved random number algorithms?

They still have to go through the same independent lab testing.

    Yes.
The actual software running is newer, more robust...
That’s like asking if Windows 3.1 is the same thing as Windows 10...they’re both an OS; they’re both Windows...

Sort of. It’s either random or not. But there can be improvements in terms of how fast or efficiently it works. We could get pretty deep into some computer science theory but thatd probably be a bit overkill.

Thanks for the reply's. Just for the record, I go through many many $20's. Here in Detroit we have 3 downtown casinos. Greektown is the only one with a few older machines left. I have noticed that people seem to gravitate towards those machines. I wish there was some kind of comparison chart for payoffs from the newer machines vs the older ones. I'm telling you, there is a big difference.

I can't speak to Detroit specifically, but in most jurisdictions, a VP machine has to be a true simulation of a randomly-shuffled 52-card deck (not accounting for things like jokers, random bonuses, multipliers, etc.). As Bayou mentioned, whether or not something is "random" is probably a subject for another message board that I'm sure exists but I've never visited. I believe, though, that most RNGs in gaming are closer to "pseudorandom"; however, if they improve that to make it closer to true randomness, that shouldn't impact the odds in any appreciable way over the long term.

Places like New York, which have what appear to be video poker but are actually VLTs, are a whole other story, but that shouldn't be the case in Detroit. There are plenty of people who might prefer the older machines to the newer machines for reasons other than odds, just as my mother prefers the old 3-reel slots with the handles you pull as opposed to the full-on video machines, despite her not having the slightest clue about how payout percentages work. I personally prefer the Game King bartops to the Aristocrat ones.

@44inarow hit it on the head. I have lost my ass on new machines and old machines.. I have won and done great on both. I like the older style games esp if they are coin droppers DT... but that's cause the cards move slower and it forces me to slow down.

@Wanker751 may be onto something - I do notice the speed on the newer ones seem to move a bit faster (maybe because the software just runs a bit faster on the newer hardware) so I end up slowing down the speed so I can lose my money (or get that long overdue royal) at a more leisurely pace...

Historically, I feel like I've done better on the "new" machines versus the "old" machines, but ymmv.

Something seems off, I play a lot of VP and always will hit a few 4 of a kinds, while playing over a 6 day period earlier this month, I never hit more than a full house. Something seemed different, feel like I played my usual amount.
