It happens when you least expect it. Even if you've just been there. I'm having a Vegas emergency! There are no pressing work or family demands for the moment, so I've booked myself a quick solo trip to Cosmo tomorrow. I'll barely be there 24 hours -- just long enough to put my feet up on that fountain-view lounger and use some FP and FB before it expires.

I may be too busy with important Vegas business to post while I'm there. So here's my TR in advance.

    --

Wednesday noon: I summon an UberPool to the airport. The driver gets lost picking up another passenger in a weird suburban neighborhood in a town near SFO that I didn't even know existed. But thanks to the magic of TSA Pre, I still get to the gate 45 minutes before takeoff. Cost: around $18 (compared to the old days, when the equivalent taxi ride was $45).

3:03 p.m.: My Virgin America flight lands two minutes early. I've been upgraded automatically to premium economy and have an entire exit row to myself. And though I don't bother to drink on the flight, I do put a couple micro-bottles of Bailey's in my bag. Cost: nothing.

3:15: There's my favorite driver. We're in the house Tesla again. I ask how his son is doing in his new job, and what the latest gossip is about the construction at the Wynn end of the Strip. Cost: $20.

3:38: Checking in at Cosmo VIP. Because it's midweek and it's just me, I ask for a high-floor East Tower terrace studio ending in -97 or -98 (my favorite rooms for maximum view and minimum noise). I grab an extra water and a cappuccino on my way out. Cost: nothing...yet. ;)

3:57: After dumping my stuff, I stand on my terrace for a few minutes enjoying the view, then text the customary photo to Mr. Boots. Then downstairs to the casino!

4:23: Jeez. Down that far already?! This sucks. I decide to take a break from slots. Cost: $245.

4:31: I'm at Chandelier level one. I'm practicing my beginner-level video poker skills. Haven't hit anything yet. Nor has the VP machine spit out a drink ticket. But that peach drink is as good as I remembered. I decide to keep playing until I win something or a ticket materializes, whichever happens first.

4:46: I finally get back up near where I started, thanks to four nines and a three. I cash out and give the bartender my drink ticket and tip. Time to try those slots again. Cost: $29.

5:15: Seriously, am I just choosing the wrong games? I move yet again to a different bank. Cost: $160.

5:34: Finally, a bonus over $150! About time.

5:38: Another one! Yay! I increase my bet.

5:51: And I'm back down to where I was before. Sigh. Time for a food break.

6:00: I'm at the bar at China Poblano. I've just ordered three tacos and a Salt Air Margarita. Still kind of miffed that they discontinued one of my favorite tacos AND my favorite gin cocktail this summer. But this is not at all bad. And they have hooks under the bar here, so you don't have to put your purse on the floor. It's the little things. Cost: nothing but tax and tip, thanks to my current offer.

6:36: Semi-fed and slightly tipsy. I detour to my room to admire the view before returning to the casino. Ooh, lookit, splashy fountains! Pretty pretty!

6:50: Back on the floor. I remember that I have some free play. I check in at the Identity desk and discover that I've made it back over the Platinum threshold in just six months, not a year. I find this vaguely embarrassing.

6:56: I'm in HL. There are no cookies. Someone's already at Ocean Pearl. Someone else is at Diamond Queen. Yet another person is at $5 Pinball. It's not like they're winning or anyth-- oh wait, there goes Ocean Pearl. Along with my cunning plan for a quick handpay using FP. Grrrr.

6:59: Sulking, I retreat to the bank of old-school quarter IGT slots near 88 Fortunes. Manage to snag a cocktail server fairly quickly, and order a...what do I want? I can never decide. Given my previous beverage choices today, I settle on a mojito with no simple syrup, just lime and mint. And a water, please. Thanks! Cost: $182.

7:22: OK, so it's no handpay, but $434 is better than nothing. I'm still down, but not by as much. I cash out and walk aimlessly through the casino, only to make an unexpected turn at some accursed Wonka machine. Am I really that stupid? Yes, it appears I am!

You can guess how the rest of the evening goes. It's fun, aggravating, tedious, amusing, and occasionally exciting. At some point I grab a mushroom slice from Secret Pizza. By 12:30 a.m. I've probably played 35 different machines. I'm down hundreds of dollars, but at least I didn't go through my entire BR. I stop at Va Bene Café for an extra-hot, extra-large latte to take to my room (it goes into a thermal carafe so I have hot coffee first thing in the morning). I've taken pics of my starting and ending point balances and kept track of how much $ I went through, but I'm too tired to do the math now. I go around the room covering up all the annoying glowy light switches and LEDs with electrical tape, turn the room fan on high to block any outside noise, make sure the five water bottles I've collected are lined up on the bedside table, and look at the view one last time. Goodnight, Vegas.

8:24 a.m.: I wake up. Slept great. I hop out of bed and open the drapes. It always feels like unwrapping a present. Hello, Vegas! Look at that view!

8:45: I'm sprawled on my terrace lounger with my still-hot latte (enriched by those micro-Baileys from the plane) and an iPad. Reading the news, looking at the view. This is why I spend all that money at Cosmo. And why it's so hard to branch out to other places. In a bit I'll go downstairs for some Eggslut, or maybe go to Wicked Spoon -- there's still a fair amount of FB to spend. I have a 2:00 p.m. check-out, which translates as "all the time in the world." That's what it feels like, anyway. Love this place!

Thanks for following along on my upcoming adventure. If actual events fail to match this narrative, I'll be sure to update here. But there's no reason to expect they will! :)

Hmm, maybe I've been sleep-Vegasing. Will have to check my phone for incriminating pics. :)

Yeah, don't think I would have done that, even in my sleep -- I never win on QH, and hate the bonus music. But now I'm going to have to stick a $20 in there. :)

Thanks @tringlomane -- will do my best! :)

@mike841, some of my favorite Vegas visits have been of the short and last-minute variety. One huge benefit: There's not enough time to lose all that much money.

@nhcris!!! You're my hero too! I will have to invent a special song/dance to summon those aces. Who cares if the bartender looks at me funny. o_O

I felt like your pretrip trip report was based on my past Cosmo experiences. Hope you get to update the real one with some jackpots!

And I definitely need to start bringing electrical tape for all those annoying lights!
