So I've been going to Vegas a minimum of 2x/year since about 1992, some years even 6x/year. At first I was way more about blackjack and only dabbled in slots. As time went on that ratio slowly inverted itself and the opposite is now true. In all of that time I've only ever had 1 handpay, a bonus spin for $1000 on a 2 coin $1 WOF machine at the Tropicana in the late 90's. No 1099 at least. In the early days my daily bankroll was only $100/day, so I seldom played anything above a $.75/spin game. As time went on my daily bankroll crept up to $300/day, then $500/day and so on to it's current level of $1000/day. That's strictly for gambling, anything else like food or shopping is a different budget.

These days I'm all over the place for my slot play. I'll always play max bet on any game up to $4-$5. There's low max games like Cash Wizard and misc Quick Hits games for $2 or less that I enjoy. For the more expensive games like Fu Dao Le or Dancing Drums I'll mix it up betting a spread anywhere from the $2.88 range to the $8.80ish maxes. I enjoy a few Wonder 4 choices. Every once in awhile I'll take a few spins for a couple of higher limit games like Cleo 2 for Davinci Diamonds at $20/pop.

Got a confirmed Sept trip in a few weeks and most likely another Nov one to be confirmed within days. Pretty much a devoted MLifer, with a little side love to Wynn/Encore. And my play follows that pattern. Not really into any of the CET portfolio except Caesars, and that's not enough to draw me away from the places I really enjoy. But I'm ready to end this 20 year handpay drought, so fellow VF's, what would you do to end it?

Spin your hat around backwards. Put all your change in your left-hand pocket. Stick a golf tee above your right ear. :)

    Yup.
In other words, it really just comes down to luck and timing.

    Honestly?

Take a bunch of money, play Double Double Bonus VP at the $5 level ($25 per hand). any four of a kind or better will get you there. Make sure the full house pays 45 credits, the flush also preferably pays 30 instead of 25.

For slots, I would also bet at the $5 level minimum (preferably $10 level) 3 reel machines. Especially machines with multiplying wild symbols.

This is how I would try if I insisted on trying to make a handpay. I don't recommend you gambling out of your comfort zone though.

When it comes to trying to hit a handpay, variance is actually your friend.

I'm 17 years in without any, but that's less surprising as I'm still more on the $100/day budget.

Good luck in September breaking the streak!

Thanks, yeah that's kinda the response I was hoping for. I know VP is the smarter play, I just don't particularly enjoy the grind of it. One of the same reasons I drifted away from blackjack ( along with a monumental dry run of bad luck ). Became more about just paying attention to strategy instead of just enjoying the moment. Vegas is still a vacation for me first. When sitting at a slot, I enjoy just zoning out, enjoying a beverage or two and a cigar and indulging in the fantasy of hitting something substantial. I just find it kinda odd that I've only ever had that 1 big hit in the years I've been playing, especially in the last 10 years when my bet level has escalated.

It depends on your slot selection too. There are tons of video slots out there designed to pay small amounts frequently to keep you in the game. If you played those frequently, it would be quite difficult to hit handpays on those unless you bet things like $10+ a spin.

Last year because I had WAY too much time on my hands, I compiled data from all the pictured hits from last year's Spring Fling. Of the 43 slot handpays, the average bet was close to $23 a spin for reels with a median of $15, and for video slots an average bet of $26 with a median bet of $10.

That's not true. If you want to hit a handpay, you just have to play a slot machine and win at least $1200 on a single spin. Simple as that!

$5 video poker. Any 4oak will be a handpay. Outside of that you'd really need to look for a multi line game that's going to be in the $20/spin range. A good chance any sort of bonus spin at that level will lead to a HP

I have never hit a hand pay when trying for one. For me they come unexpectedly and usually only after a minimum amount of spins. Last trip I had zero hand pays, the trip before I had one after lowering my bet to $1.80.

We think alike, I review random things like that as view if I get too bored. Maybe I'll pull up recent YouTube videos and do the same.

The win $1200 part is what trips me up.

I can only tell you what has worked for me....particularly over the last two years. I have increased my daily bankroll to about $1,500/day while in Vegas. That allows me to bet at a $3 - $5 per pull. That has resulted in fairly regular $300 - $800 wins. When I build a bank with those wins, I go into the HL room and take a run at $10 - $20 per pull.

When I go to my local, I typically take $1,000 and go right to HL. Always play at $10 or more per spin. Sometimes that BR is gone in 30 - 60 minutes and I’ll have to decide if I’m willing to risk more. I have had good results with that strategy the last two years.

As mentioned above don’t go beyond what you’re comfortable losing. You can certainly win quite a bit this way, but you can lose your ass too. I’ve done both.

I shorthanded your process. Pulled the 10 latest handpay videos that I could easily find in Vegas casinos on YouTube, not using more than 1 result from each player. Came up with a range of bets from $3 ( some Buffalo game the retriggered free games multiple times) to $100 (the Big Jackpot doing his $100/spin madness on Sky Riders). Came up with an average bet of $28.66, average handpay of $1985.85. The elevated bet levels of $50 & $100 fell well short of the average. payout. $10, $20 & $25 bets beat the average by noticeable margins. For the most part the <$6 bets just barely beat the handpay mark. Guess my betting level isn't as on track as I thought. Just surprising to me with the amount of handpays I see at my betting level or lower. Your results may vary.

That's not too drastically different from my typical Vegas approach. $1000/day and my average bet amount is probably close to $5. Seldom get hits over $300 though. I COULD bump my bankroll, but not worth it. Don't quite that Degen yet... When Palm Springs becomes our permanent residence in 9 months I doubt I'll gamble like that on a daily basis.

I'm a $5 to $8.88 to $10 to $15 (rarer) slotter. If I get up a thousand or two I go to my nemesis machine in hl and play $15 a spin. July I was lucky to get 3 handys as I hadn't so far in the year, (playing $10) but it could have been the $5000 I won in fp for the $500 buy in that helped. In April tho at B, where I usually get handy after handy (okay fine, maybe only 3 or 4) didn't get one.I usually have 8 or 9 or 11 to use to claim back the 30% from IRS (Canadian) every year, but only have 3 for the year so far. (I cooled my trips this year after I blew a $10,872 handpay last October).. But I like the golf tee suggestion. My Dad had 8 hole in ones in his life (5 on a long, 3 on a short, including an albatross, (not sure what it is but I'm sure I could use an albatross),,,so I'm gonna dig into his box I kept after he passed and I KNOW there's some tees in there. Good idea above!!! Could bring me luck in 12 days! Good luck Ace!

An "albatross" is a "double eagle" which is scoring a 2 on a par 5, or a hole in one on a Par 4. Both more impressive than a typical hole in one.

I might have played a couple of dozen rounds in my life, closest I got was about 6 inches away. A rare birdie for me!

When playing dancing drums, pick the 3 or 5 free games in bonus. Higher volatility so better chance at a jackpot. Buffalo, buffalo gold , wicked winning 2 or 3 are good jackpot makers.
