My wife and I will be heading back to LV over xmas for another trip and I have been wanting to add slot play into our repertoire which currently consists of Craps and Video Poker. We have tried some slots in the past but very limited investment in time and money. My question is what would be a good strategy for a newbie to get their feet wet, have some fun and experience the fun of slot play?

    About us:
Not high rollers, not looking to maximize comps, we assume our gambling budget is left in LV each trip(hopefully just the budget) and we are looking to maximize play but would enjoy the potential for the big hit that VP and Craps doesn't usually offer for generally low rollers.

If it helps, we will be staying at Cosmopolitan and are Identity members.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated

    A lot of them
Slots can be a lot of fun but can also be devastating when going on tilt (I know). Two factors are only playing with what you can afford to lose and having the discipline to quit when you’re ahead. Odds always favor the casinos the longer you play.

Thank you very much! This is the kind of detail we were looking for and we will most certainly check out some of these machines at Cosmo. We are at Cosmo 12/25-12/30 so meeting for a drink would probably work!

    Thanks again!

Thanks! Yes, we developed some budget management skills as we navigated Craps and then Video Poker and part of the reason we haven't gotten into slots is that when we have played, the money seems to evaporate so we've been hesitant to dive in deep.

    Thanks for the reply!

    Identity Platinum,
My advice is start low. If you are playing $1ish per spin, you will have fun and have the same experience on almost every machine. You will see when the jackpots don't pay unless it's on max bet, it is almost always right there next to the jackpot. ie $3000 at max coins. I don't even play those ones, it pisses me off.
Anyway, it is much easier to play and enjoy at smaller bets when you aren't used to slots. If you start yourself higher, then have to go down, the wins feel sucky at $1 and it isn't as fun. Make sense?

As for games at Cosmo at low bets?
The Voice of course hahaha. It loves .75 bets. It is in the bond area too so you get that bond spin when you make enough points. I win $100 on 75c bets enough to keep me going for a while. Turn the volume up on it, and when the game 'feels' quiet, leave and come back later. When it's hot, I dunno, the chair seems to rumble a lot and it's loud. If I play this game on high bets, it eats my money, but I've been trying it lately because the videos of the huge wins on the free spins make me jealous. It pretty much never happens, plus even at .75, if your game did give you all the multipliers, your payout would still be big.

Wonder 4 Boost. There's 2 by the identity desk. Playing all 4 on whales of cash is $1. It can pay pretty decent too. It's almost tied with The voice for me. Great game. The one on the left seems to pay more, but my hand pay was on the one on the right. I will usually change one of the boards to buffalo when it gets going. The american whatever is expensive and that stupid rhino game never does anything for me and it's expensive too. The whales multiplying by 4 in the bonus game can give some good wins. Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it sucks ;). There is a 5c version in the HL room. I play that too. 4 whales of cash is $5. I've been sneaking in a lot to play that when I'm all high roller hahaha.

In the middle of nowhere on the slot island that has the security desk, there's Timberwolf Grand. The qualifying bet to win the jackpots is 1.50. Play this on 1.50, not .75, just in case. Seems like every other grand game is 3.00 to qualify, so I really like this one. The machine, that if you walked right through it, you would end up at The Henry is the one that pays me. I've done well on it.

Also in the bond area, as you walk from the window towards the cash machine, there is a regular buffalo machine. I was betting $4 on it, but every 100 I threw in there last trip made me a bunch of money. You can absolutely play that on low bets too. Plus the bond spin, whatever it's called.

I also play all the lightning link type games at .50c cus that's how i roll. Even the last couple trips when I've been playing about $5/spin on most games. It's habit.

There's also a bunch of 88c games with jackpots. You can win the jackpots at 88c, so they are worth trying as well. They were my favourite but I've been avoiding them lately. I haven't won a real jackpot in a long time, so I'm not chasing them anymore.

(also other than the last two trips where I was bad and bet high, this is how I tend to play. I'm about a $2/spin player and still had pretty good offers. I do play all day long though hahaha) So even though you aren't trying to maximize comps, you may end up okay in offers anyway :D.

The konami games are pretty good. You can do pretty well on those in the $1 range too. There's a bunch by the window where The Voice is.. and bond spin... Yeah, I like that bond area, what can I say. Put wonder 4 boost in there and I might not play in any other part of the casino.

    Identity Platinum,
Yeah, that's the one. No idea why the name never sticks.
The hard part about playing in the bond area is getting there. If I stay in Chelsea tower all the games call my name and I run out of cash before I get there. When I stayed in boulevard I would get there no problem. I feel like I lose the most in the Bene area, but that tends to be where the games catch me so .. I don't know. My money seems to last longer in the Bond area and between the Identity desk and high limit.

I would say if your primary objective is to simply have fun, you really can't go wrong with picking a slot that comes from a movie or TV show that you enjoy. People will tell you that generally, slots from licensed properties don't pay as often or as well, and there may be some truth to that. However, that has not always been my experience (most recently I won $1,000 on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer machine on a $1 bet), and I get a ton of fun out of playing slots that are from things that I already love. So if FUN is your number one concern, that would be my recommendation.

And slots really don't have to be a complete bankroll sucker either. You can find penny slots where you can play as little as 20-30 cents a spin to play all the lines and that can give you hours of entertainment.

    Identity Platinum,
I agree. There are some fun branded slots. The gremlins one was super fun and I have spent days playing the old game of thrones. The new one (looks like a pyramid kinda) sucks. I don't watch that show, or the voice but the games rock. If it's fun, do it. I've also played the odd game that even though I was winning I hated them. (that plinko rip off game)

Yeah, you've had the Fray Cosmo our now lol. I give it to everyone I take. Nobody else I go with seems to gamble, so I tell them my names for the areas and the machines I play so they can find me. Usually they just text me that they are at The Voice hahaha.

I am creating a quick map of the Cosmo floor plan and adding in all these locations and the notes you wonderful people have provided!

This is just what I was looking for! I now am very well prepared to lose a ton of money but feel like I know what I am doing.

    Perfect!

This group once again shows why they're the best!!

I'd recommend watching Neily777 videos on Youtube. He has some interesting strategies to make slot play a little more fun. I'd take a look at his videos titled "Cash Me Out" - he takes five $20 bills, and puts them in five different machines. If he gets over $25 on any of the machines he cashes out. Then after five, see if he made a profit.

It's a good low budget way to try out a number of different games, I've enjoyed trying it out and have actually ended up with a profit more than a loss when doing it.
