So I just finished my first shift in two weeks (I’m contingent so my schedule is weird). I’m a negative person and this was still worse than I thought.

Stay home. Wash your hands, stay away from people.

I’ve briefly talked to friends and acquaintances on the front line here in Los Angeles and they are extremely overwhelmed. They are terrified because these are the people who came in contact with the virus before we were all politely asked to stay home.

Based on the detailed stories that they’ve shared about what’s happening inside of those tents, I can say that things will not go back to normal anytime in April. My employer has told us that we won’t be back in the office until at least June 1st.

Yeah, I have been home for all the conference calls, the doctors right now are trying to stay away from the hospital unless absolutely necessary. Even NICU and PICU are freaked (is freaked the right word? super concerned?) and kids aren't hit as hard. Stay home. There's plans a, b, c, d going on.. and then more news comes. I have not left my house in 10 days now. My husband only goes to the hospital and back and we are resigning ourselves to the fact he/we will get it. He has hypertension and diabetes. This is real and scary as hell. We are a couple weeks behind here and still people are wasting the time and going out.

Supposedly 11 doctors in my province tested positive today.. they had gone curling a week or so ago when everyone was still figuring out what was going on and thinking travelling in Canada was safe :/

I'm off to drink some more before bed. Yay!

What I wanted to point out, is people are using these opinion pieces to guide their health decision making or lessen the seriousness of the pandemic, that's dangerous. While the free press and journalism are good for us to consume different points of view and influence the types of discussions we have or how we press our political leaders, they are not always fact based. There are certain journalistic standards and ethics credible news outlets adhere to whether its Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, NYT, Sun Sentinel, LV Review Journal, etc https://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp or they have a policy and standards link on their page. If your consuming information from a source, you should always be aware of the author and the standards. Medium is a free thought website to share ideas, but doesn't enforce any editorial standards on authors. It's very much a speaker in the square kind of site. That's why I pointed out, it should not be considered fact based.

Like you mentioned, we are flying a little blind here, because we have not had a pandemic like this one or response documented. However that doesn't mean we don't have any good statistics, or we not take seriously the advice of the people of the CDC, infectious diseases professionals, or healthcare providers. There's good information to make informed decisions in the short term. They have the experience and knowledge to interpret what is happening right now and provide us the best guidance on how to minimize impact of this virus.

One of the things getting coverage right now is the difference in the handling of the pandemic between KY and TN, both have been following different approaches and the outcome is starting to come into view.

    https://www.wkyt.com/content/news/T...much-different-than-Tennessees-568996951.html

This pandemic is hurting a lot of people. It's effecting their livelihood and profit and they are going to start screaming louder that what is being done is over reach or unnecessary. Unfortunately we will never know if we did too much to slow the spread, however it will become very apparent if we did too little.

The mayor of NYC said on CNN that April will be worse than March and May will be worse than April. It’s hard to imagine what this will do to the country through May. I wonder if anything will be back to normal this year. Obviously NYC and the state of California have a lot of people living there but here in Wisconsin it doesn’t seem too bad. Unfortunately 4 people died so far here though.

    My thoughts:

Yesterday's WH briefing the scientists and doctors again explained why the focus on number of tests was the incorrect question to be asking. I'd watch these briefings. Reading headlines is not going to be helpful in trying to understand the full context of briefings that are usually over an hour. And there have been some very misleading headlines. Just as clicking on the links, and focusing on one number, isn't really going to allow for a fuller understanding.

Please note the times given for updates on the links, so as an example, the world statistics is as of March 22, 2020, 14:16 GMT, and the US specific statistics are as of March 22, 2020, 14:18 GMT, but when you click on some of the more specific charts, these haven't been updated. This has been the case since I started posting this.

The above paragraph is important today becuase based on the newly reported cases, I'd conclude we are now firmly in the spike. Which has been predicted, and which for obvious reason is going to skew the data until we get several days of this. Some the the conclusions will be in retrospect, again for obvious reasons, and when we look back, it is likely, as an example, that we will have to conclude the spike might have really began around 3/13/2020

e.g. 2,700 new cases, and specific to region, NY 1,952. That's a spike to me as a casual observer. But I, like everyone else, need to wait for the experts to make the conclusion. But also, if it looks like a duck, etc...

I'm not sure if there is a briefing today, it wasn't clear from yesterday's comments.

My opinion is that the economic impact will be far worse (in terms of numbers) than the health impact. My business is not closely related to the hospitality, airline or other industries that are obvious, but I can see, and have implemented a plan, for reduced, or possibly no revenue for several months. Not exactly a good deal for me. I'm also extremely concerned about the unintended consequences of the two passed laws, and the one being debated, in such quick fashion.

    Identity Platinum,
thank you. It’s pretty tense over here.
    I’m worried about @claired67 too.
I turned the news off and played animal crossing all day yesterday. It helped a little. This is all surreal. I still wake up in the morning thinking I dreamt it.

off to find baileys. And to try to figure out why my Nintendo internet is a D instead of a B so I can visit other people’s islands. I have no idea what that means either. And nothing I messed with yesterday fixed it :/

Some hope is that COVID-19 is susceptible to high temperature and humidity according to one study. Lets hope for an early and hot summer.

My wife and I skipped our traditional February/March Vegas trip this year because we closed on our first house March 12. Great timing, right? We were thinking about a late May/early June Vegas trip to make up for it, but had pretty much ruled that out even before the casinos closed. And now of course it does not look like life will be back to normal by then anyway. Maybe in the fall?

Fortunately, we can both work from home so we’re still getting paid. It would be nice if there was some type of mortgage and/or rent relief passed, since we’re paying both through July if nothing changes. The original plan was to be completely out of the apartment by mid-April (typically, there are very few vacancies where we live so it seemed likely it could be rented quickly), but now who knows.

I am NOT a scientist by any means, but based on what I’m reading I think 2 things are key: ramping up testing (it is absurd that the government did not prepare for that need back in January), and finding out if people who’ve had it are immune afterward. Based on the limited data available, it seems possible that many people with the virus have either extremely minor symptoms or none at all. We know there are more cases than have been confirmed, but we don’t know how many more. I think we’re up to near 30k confirmed in the US as I write this. Are there really 100k? 300k? Millions? If we can find out how many people have actually had it and recovered, AND we find out that those people are now immune (a big if), that would really help. Of course treating the thousands who are very sick and working toward an eventual vaccine are critical, too.

One silver lining: whenever this disease is mostly contained, maybe we can keep some of the enhanced cleaning/sanitary procedures that we probably should have had all along. My office has always allowed work from home and yet people came in with colds and worse all winter anyway. Hopefully after we get through however many weeks of everyone working from home, people will realize they can be basically as productive without coming in and spreading their germs.

On a optimistic note - I just booked Aug 13th to Vegas - might as well remain positive and hopeful.

I’m trying to remain optimistic as well, and I think you’re probably OK with a mid-August booking. I have a family wedding in Vegas on 8/14. Haven’t booked anything yet, though. Waiting for an indication from the bride & groom first.
