    Ouch....

Woman loses slot machine jackpot after Social Security error. Fox News

It sounds as if the casino has admitted the error, but is prohibited by Maryland law of paying out the Jackpot to her. If the story is correct she has to present information to the Maryland Gaming Commission who would then pay her back. Sadly, it sounds from the tone of her comments that she might not have the money to get to Baltimore.

What a mess. And horrid luck that the SSN they entered owed tax money to the State.

Just a friendly reminder to check your documentation BEFORE signing it. The casinos try, but they ARE staffed by humans, and humans make mistakes. Still, the offer of $200 free play credit and drink vouchers was a little tight depending on what the jackpot actually was.

What a kick to the junk. In my experience they always have me write my SSN down. Obviously it could still get transcribed wrong on their end.

Mistakes do happen. From my limited time at MGM National Harbor, I got the impression that most of the players are locals, or within driving distance. Oxon HIll isn't but maybe 45 mins to an hour from Baltimore. Certainly worth the drive to pick up $$ that is owed. I'm thinking she's looking for her 15 minutes . . .

That's why you always need to check the W2-G's when you get them before you sign. I always do, but probably wouldn't have thought of it if it wasn't for some of the times where the slot attendant asks me to check the info on them.
She may have and saw it was wrong and didn't say anything thinking it might avoid her paying taxes, then came back to bite her.

    Figures, Maryland.

We almost had an issue with a clerical error on one of ours but because I'm psycho, we caught it before it became a problem.

I am sure she will end up getting it back since obviously the lady didn't owe on back child support or anything like that I don't see it mentioned anywhere but how much was the jackpot for?

I don't think they ever released the actual amount except to say "thousands".

I'm sure she'll get it, once she presents proper identification to the MGC.

On a side note, the mistake sucks for her, but props to Maryland for cracking down on dirtbags spending money at the casino instead of paying their child support

This should be a no-brainer for MGM.

Arrange a day with the winner. Send a limo to take her and a guest to the gaming office to fill out the forms and get her money. The limo then takes her and her guest to the casino, where they provide her and her guest a nice comp'd diner and a nice comp'd room for the night. After a comp'd breakfast or brunch the next day, the limo takes them home.

MGM keeps a customer happy. And MGM gets an immediate shot at the cash.

    Update.

    They paid her

Amazing how fast they went from "we're prohibited by law to pay this" to "here's your money, please come back soon"

A little bad press is an amazing thing.

So it wasn't in the hands of the gaming commission after all? I understood it as it was the state that was holding the money.

That was the line MGM was initially taking. I think that's true according to MD law but they agreed to allow the casino to make it right by the lady to stop all of the negative press.

To be fair, I do believe them when they say they ran into state legal issues, but bad press is a great way to prod the government relations team into getting on the phone with the appropriate authorities ASAP.

Wonder if the state also kept the initial jackpot designated for the support-less child? Hmmmm.

I believe them as well. I think both they and the State had a moment of shared clarity after the story hit the press.

It will probably go unreported, but I'm betting MGM and the State negotiate a refund.

In other news: Lady shocked to discover that she owes tax to the IRS from gambling wins....

This is such a non-story... Human mistake happened... Laws dictate the procedure... Casino pays to calm the crowd who don't care about rules...

What would be NICE is if their law had an exception for this exact occurrence. Any reasons the lawmakers didn't consider human error when entering player personal info into the system?

I can think of one reason - fraud.
