It's more complicated than licensed games. Dancing Drums and Rising Fortunes at MGM Springfield (to use a local property I can cite accurately) are specialty games, as is Ultimate Fire Link. But the Lock it Link variations aren't. Mighty Cash isn't. 5 Treasures isn't. Aside from a few obvious ones (Bond is definitely specialty in Vegas, for instance) there's not always a rhyme or reason. I will say at Springfield you can see the coins remaining when you put your card in, and if it's more than $3 you know immediately; it's not as clear in Vegas where the systems don't give you the same level of information so you have to watch when it credits your next point and how many bets it was.

Note that they're not changing the Tier Credit earnings rate, just the express comps. So you still earn 10 tier credits per $3 (non-specialty) or $10 (specialty/video poker) in Vegas (and a lot less elsewhere, which just makes it more confusing). The points you earn are also unaffected from the looks of things, so the points for comps/pointplay are the same. It's the Express Comps only that are being made less clear.

It's worth noting Mlife is extremely complicated because there's three numbers - tier credits, points, and express comps. Most companies just have two, like Caesars Rewards only has Tier Credits and Reward Credits. There's some that feel that makes Mlife's comps more generous as you get two pools of comps to contend with, but at times it also makes it more confusing.
