Nothing sets off a firestorm amongst Vegas Fans like Resort Fees. Ive seen a ton of YouTube shorts and TikToks about Resort Fees being banned in the US now, thanks to a new law.

I have some cursing in this one, so I didn't want to cut and paste it on here. But I received enough emails on this topic in my mailbag, I figured I'd bring the discussion into the group.

Be honest, do these changes mean ANYTHING to you, how you book or how you vacation? Or is it just a load of BS lip service, to make it seem like they did something?

Means nothing to me. I'd prefer less regulation personally. Regulation costs money. Currently all the hotels want to advertise the lowest rate to draw people in but make up for it with "hidden" resort fees. If and when they're required to include the resort fee in the advertised rate, it will level the playing field. So the new rate + fee combo simply becomes the new baseline, and the entire purpose for excluding the fee becomes a moot point.

I don't think for one second that costs will decrease; they may even go up. After all, who else but the customer has to pay the IT department to make the code changes required to comply with the law. Last year cruise ships started including port, fees, and taxes in the price displayed up front, and it doesn't appear to have affected anything. People who either 1) have never rented a hotel or 2) cannot do basic addition, merely know the price 1 or 2 screens earlier in the checkout flow.

Bingo! The industry has long moved away from actually hiding the fee. Expedia, Travelocity ETC all had a hard time keeping up with who had what fees. As the resorts would often change how much they would later bill. At least that was their excuse to just mention that there is a fee, but not actually say how much the fee was.

But they have been showing the fees on the next screen for as long as I can recall now. So 10, maybe even 15 years.

To be fair, the fee used to be like $9.99. It was more annoying then a deal breaker. But as the hotels got greedier, those fees got out of control. Excalibur is almost $45 per day at that shit hole. For what? Use of the pool that isnt open in winter? Phone calls from your room, that you wont be making?

You want to park your car overnight during your stay? That is $18 more, and not covered by the fee. You want room service? That is another fee. But dont forget to tip!
