I don't take pictures, so I will provide a summary in sections.

    Travel

The players are myself, my wife M and for the weekend, my God daughter K. K is on a short term assignment in Phoenix, so she drove in for Fri and Sat nights and stayed in our suite. We took a later flight than usual, arriving on SW around 4:30 Wed night. Our host was waiting for us in VIP check in. We had an offer for $150night for food and the same in free play. Some days we used none of the food money since we don't like to get tied into comps so much that we fail to have a good time.

You probably have heard me say this a million times by now, but we have been with our host now for about 20 years. We followed him to the Trop from CET and if he ever leaves the Trop, we will follow him to wherever he settles. We are never very hungry after a trip, so we let the Bell staff take the bags to our suite and had a quick sandwich with our host. It is always good to catch up with him and this was no exception. He offered to get us a room for our God daughter, but we don't see her that often and she really wanted to stay with us.

We had a new room this trip, it is called a Penthouse Spa suite. This vid is the exact room number we had, 2201 / 2101.

While it was beautiful and really big ( like 1,700 Sq Ft. ) we didn't care for the layout since it was on 2 separate floors. You got off on the 21st floor for the living room/ hot tub and 22nd for the bedroom. It may seem petty, but I never got off on the right floor! It did provide K some privacy for the weekend though as she occupied the first floor. The hot tub was crazy big and could have easily held 6 people

    Food

We ate at both of the upscale restaurants at the Trop, Bacio and Biscayne Steak house. Both were very good as usual. Robert Irvine has a new place going in soon, but it wasn't open this trip. The only downside is that the coffee shop is now only offering a "Boutique buffet". We don't mind it once, but we ate elsewhere other days. Bacio now offers breakfast and they have my new favorite. A take on Eggs Benedict that starts with a bed of crab and asparagus, covered with a perfect filet and topped with Hollandaise......I'm sure there is also an English muffin in there someplace.

We ate a couple of mornings at Mon Ami Gabi which remains our favorite breakfast spot. Sat morning K wanted to try Eggslut since she had heard so much about it. After breakfast we wandered over to see the Conservatory then intended to take the Bellagio tram over to the MC and walk home from there. As we approached the escalators at the Bellagio some dumb ass security guy loudly states that the tram is closed because there is an active shooter in the area. Mini panic ensues as people try to figure out what to do. Most headed back towards the Bellagio casino, I decided we would head towards Aria. We hit Vdara first and I saw a few cabs in queue. I motioned for the doorman slipped him a 20 and we had a way home. Enough drama for one trip....

Thurs night we met friends at Tap sports bar in the MGM. They have great bar food and it is the perfect place to eat and drink as you view the March Madness games. We ended up there on both Thurs and Fri nights just because it worked out so well and the food was good.

I will come back and finish up the gambling section......

Did they change the room name from Penthouse Loft to Penthouse Spa? I know the Penthouse Loft I had was on two floors and had a sauna in it (as do the Club Spa suites) and the giant hot tub downstairs. It looked a little bit different than yours in that you could see the hot tub when you looked down from the upstairs loft bedroom. We didn't care for the layout, either, and just asked for the Club Spa Suites after that.

    Is your hosts initials LM?

Do you mean that the breakfast buffet I had on Sunday was all they offer at Beach Cafe now all the time, just buffet -- no more regular menu? I would be heartbroken. They make one of the best grilled chicken Cobb salads anywhere.

Wow, that's crazy that security guy said that!

Is the overhead walkway from Tropicana to MGM Grand open now?

Looking forward to reading the rest of the report. :)

    Gaming

We come twice a year and the March trip is always planned around the second round of the NCAA basketball games. I bet on sports nearly everyday and college basketball is one of my favorite sports. Without a doubt this was my worst year ever betting on March Madness. I have a couple of "go to" strategies for these games and one of the biggest is to bet the totals under. They put up a line not only on who wins, but on the total points for the game. My strategy for decades has been to play the under because far more go under than over. Not this year, at least not on the games I bet.

I had a crazy good year maybe 2 or 3 years ago where I won 15 of 16 bets during this same 4 day stretch. This year, I collected exactly one bet. I made a good score on the Dubai World Cup horse races, but it hardly made up for the basketball massacre. In any case, I remain amazed at how good the lines are. Every game came down to the point spread. Half the crowd would go crazy on one basket, and the other half on the next basket. Even though the wounds haven't healed, I am already plotting my next bets.

I play a variety of casino games. Black Jack used to be my primary game, but my BJ luck has been horrible for about a decade now, so I played maybe an hour this entire trip and once again lost.

I know some of you have the patience and stamina for hours and hours of VP. I simply don't. I find myself bored within a few minutes. But I do like the carny versions like Spin Poker and Ultimate X. I swore off Super Times pay after numerous beatings in multiple venues. This trip spin poker was my crack. I played the quarter version for 45 a spin and had a ball. A few monster hits with delt 4s OAK, but also many dry spells that ate up a lot of cash.

My wife plays slots non stop all day, every day. I tend to play mostly in the early morning when I first get up and later at night after all the games are over. My slot luck followed my sports betting this trip. I was always the guy sitting next to the jackpot winner as I saw at least a dozen hand pays close to me this trip. I should have charged people to sit next the them!

One particular painful session came about 6AM on the Buffalo Gold bank. I was getting killed on a machine, dropping about $700 while playing $3.60/spin. I finally gave up and moved from the far left machine to the far right machine. A few minutes go bay and an elderly woman sits at my "loser" machine. On the second spin, playing 60 cents/ spin she gets 4 coins. I have gotten 4 coins several times on Buffalo Gold and it seems I never do well on the bonus round. On her first free spin she gets 4 more coins! I stifled the urge to beat her with her cane. Instead I sat there and saw coin after coin and gold buffalo after gold buffalo pop up for her. I kept losing on my machine as I watched her collect all 15 gold buffalos with 12 games left! To make matters worse, she let every winning spin play out......the music, the joy......it was KILLING me!. But I forced myself to stay, I deserved this misery since it was in keeping with my gambling luck this entire trip. At the end, she collected a little over $2,000 on a 60 cent bet. I already did the math so you don't need to tell me what it would have paid at $3.60 / spin!!!

    Summary

Degenerates are a crazy bunch, because I had a ball. Sure it would have been a lot more fun had I won, but if winning is required for having fun in Vegas, it is time to find a new vacation spot. The food was great, I got to spend some quality time with one of my God Daughters and some close friends. My wife won, so she had a great time.

We noticed there seem to be fewer beggars on the pedestrian over passes. I don't know if there has been a effort to get rid of them , or if it was just too cold for them. I also noticed that many of the escalators on those over passes were not working again. With an average of 20,000 people staying in the hotels on those 4 corners, there is no excuse for not keeping the infrastructure in working order.

We like the Trop, but the lack of a full size sports book is a real pain. While all the restaurant construction is going on, there are down to 2 or 3 kiosk betting stations and just a few TVs for viewing. I'm sure we could get comped anywhere, but at least for now, this is our Vegas home. We already booked out Oct trip and it is always nice knowing we will be back......

Apparently Penthouse Spa is the new name, the layouts differ depending on where on the floor they are. This room is on the end, so it sits in a perfect place where you can look down the strip in either direction. But I'm with you, we are going with the Club spa suite next time.

Yup LM is our guy for about 20 years now.

No, the buffet is just at breakfast. They offer the regular menu the rest of the day. In fact I had the Cobb when we had a bite with LM on arrival. If you do go back, you have to try Bacio for breakfast....it is really good.

The overhead walkway is still out! Had to cross to Excal , then to NYNY, then to MGM....a real pain!

I really like that beautiful suite but wonder why they put the huge hot tub in the dining area lol. Haven't tried Eggslut yet and wondering if you thought the trip was worth it. That Buffalo Gold story reminded me to follow my rule next trip...after a losing slot session walk far away and don't ever look back. Thanks for the great report.

There is a ton of wasted space in that suite, but the hot tub is actually in a great location. You can relax in it and have a view out all the windows. I had already "done" Eggslut on a previous trip. Although the food is good, we really prefer a sit down/ relaxing breakfast........ plus I hate lines and there is always a line.

I always walk as well, but I am currently addicted to Buffalo Gold and didn't really expect company at that hour....

Did I miss the Sinatra part?

It's still cool that you take your nieces. What a crazy trip for her. I kind of remembered you were in Vegas but thought "oh, he's at the Trop"

A room with two entrances would drive me insane. I'd never be able to sleep. Would you request that room again (or would your wife)?

We didn't do Sinatra this trip. Just too many things set up with too many people. We loved the suite, but as a one time thing. They have a spa suite on one floor we will request in the future. K loved the room and said if she meets us in the Fall, she wants it again....

I really liked the room and the 2 floors would suit me well, as I get up in the middle of the night a lot and also super early. I wouldn't have to worry about disturbing anyone if I could be on the first floor while they slept. Sounds like your Goddaughter is gonna make an appearance in the fall and you will have no choice but to book the same room. lol Sounds like you had a nice trip other than the extra "Madness" during March Madness. Thanks for sharing Rick!

Yes, the extra floor was nice early in the morning. I could even make coffee without bothering anyone. If K comes in the fall, I could live with it...

The Buffalo Gold story is painful. We were disappointed the Beach Cafe closed so early now. Leaves no late not dining options:(

Will try Bacio for breakfast next trip as we always enjoy dinner there.

Glad you were able to flee the craziness at Cosmo.

    Sorry we missed you!

I noticed that there were fewer beggars out on the overhead walkways. Perhaps the rains had washed there hones away in the underground?

I lived that same Buffalo Gold story! Sucked, big time. Sorry you experienced the same thing.

If I was going to continue with Trop I would have stuck with LM. He seemed like a good guy.

Good to know the buffet is just for breakfast. I'll have to try Bacio for breakfast next time. The buffet just didn't do it for me.

Thanks for the info about the walkway.

I think one of the reason for the buffet is to take care of the Hilton diamond and gold guests who get free breakfast vouchers as an automatic benefit.

Good TR. Dreadful buffalo gold story. I'm also addicted to that game like many others are. I would love to get on a game like the old lady and get in a bonus like that without having to drop hundreds. Just once. 12 buffalos is still the most I've ever gotten. Stories like yours is what keeps me playing that game.
