Let's keep this thread on point remembering his life while leaving the politics out of it.

And yes, I understand that this is challenging as he was a political powerhouse.

Removed my comment to keep this just to the details as requested.

Whether or not you agree with his politics, he's actually got quite an impressive life story. He came from pretty much nothing, donated a bunch to charity, and treated his employees very well during this crisis and encouraged other business "leaders" to do the same . He also built some beautiful resorts.

Politics aside, it's a sad day for Vegas. End of an era . . .

I will admit I never explored his story in full, and I do agree with what you said about how the properties treated the employees during the pandemic, so I guess I can say something nice.

It's similar to Wynn - he built some amazing properties and is a big part of Vegas history, but I don't think much of him as an individual.

A true Vegas visionary. I know Venetian/Palazzo was either openly for sale or at least open for discussion prior to his death, so I wonder what will come of that? One of the things I've always marveled at about Las Vegas was how it keeps re-inventing itself. We all know the post-Covid Las Vegas will be different, but you have to think his passing will magnify the overall "new" Vegas.

In addition to that, I know he was the reason that the US and even Nevada is so much more restrictive regarding online gaming than other countries. He was so against it and used his donations and influence to keep it that way. We may see a lot of changes going forward.

I definitely think one has to admire his chutzpah and he had some very impressive accomplishments. LVS was one of the first gaming stocks I bought, back in ‘09 and I did well when I sold as he did a good job turning the company around. That being said, I think his legacy will be complex given his politics and the current environment.

RIP Uncle Sheldon. So many things done right, and a few done wrong. Really like his casinos regardless.

He was an interesting guy, to say the least. His father was a gambling addict, which led to him having an impoverished childhood, yet he still went into the casino business. He pulled himself up from nothing and created a couple of massive businesses. I used to attend Comdex, which he created and owned before selling it and plowing that money into the Venetian.

I guess it’s the cool thing to do these days to dislike his politics. Twitter made me truly disgusted with all of the leftists celebrating his death - there really are some awful people out there, and not all of them are on the right. Personally I think he had only good intentions with his donations, and about 46% of the country agreed with him. I won’t miss his objections to online gambling though...I think Nevada will embrace it relatively quickly now that he isn’t there to object to it.

All in all, it’s a sad thing to see. This was reflective of the kind of business leader he was, and I don’t think even the most ardent leftist would take issue with what he wrote. I don’t know how much control he had over LVS over the last few years, so I don’t know whether or not things will change there. I don’t like the most recent changes. My guess is that he hasn’t been in control for a while, and the changes are a sign of things to come. If that’s the case, LVS is headed for some very tough times going forward.

This quote back in April was amazing, "Our job as business leaders is now as simple as it is challenging. It is to maximize the number of employees and their families that we can help — and help them for as long as possible" And he walked the talk. I don't care where you stand on the political spectrum, that's leadership, the kind that is sorely lacking in business and in politics in this country.

I was sad to hear this news... I have been staying exclusively at the V / P the past 12+ years and while the gambling has been hit or miss, our host takes great care of us and we always feel like we are staying at our Vegas home away from home. I hope that a change in ownership doesn’t change that feeling. I love that he continued to pay his employees during the shutdowns and really have to admire that. I had no idea his background and it was very interesting to learn more about his life as I read the news articles today.... It’s horrible to think that anyone would celebrate the death of anyone else... will never understand how anyone can find that type of behavior acceptable.

I agree with you Dave. We have got to stop looking at everything through a political lense. It’s making people crazy!!

More Vegas less divisive politics would make the world a much happier place!

Not sure that I agree with this but, like with Steve Wynn, there's no doubting the immense impact that he had on Vegas. Also like Wynn, he had obvious flaws, which is to be expected as they were both human beings. We should not only recognize his shortcomings but also celebrate his accomplishments. He leaves a lasting legacy which is more than most people can say.

    RIP Sheldon

However... let's keep this thread on point remembering his life while leaving the politics out of it.

And yes, I understand that this is challenging as he was a political powerhouse and some of his stances were polarizing.
