I'm heading to London in a few weeks and will be checking out at least the Hippodrome. Do any of the UK Fanatics on this board have tips or other casino recommendations? What are your favourite games that we might not find in U.S./Canada? Will we be able to play "pennies", i.e. Min bets around 1 GBP, or should I take a bigger bankroll? Any special tax rules on big wins for foreigners I should know about? <--- wishful thinking!!!

Hi, I have been to a few on the casinos in London (including he Hippodrome) and they are far from up to Vegas or US regional standards.

Probably the best is Aspers casino at there Westfield centre in East London, but even then it's small and tame compared to anything I've been to in the US.

They have WMS games there, but never had any luck nor do I enjoy the atmosphere too much.

The Hippodrome is ok, but I always felt it was quite small and never had any wins there.

Sorry to paint a negative picture but just my experience/opinion.

I'd be interested to hear what other UK members think.

Thanks for that! It's always good to adjust expectations to reflect (plausible) reality!

No worries, definitely go and take a look if you have time - if you want any tourist info or restaurant recommendations, just let me know.

As a London based degenerate I would say that you should try to head for Aspersions Stratford as mentioned. The Hippodrome is quite fun but not for slots players, there's max 45 slots with the majority being Cleo / Jungle Queen and some other crappy games. We don't have good varieties of slot over here.

The Empire is close by to the Hippodrome and again quite poor from a slots perspective. This is the reason I head to Vegas 2/3 times a year.

Bet wise you can start at 50p usually.

    Hi Tessa,

    I'm Dan, a lifelong Londoner.

I'm sorry to tell you that it's a pretty sad scene in terms of land-based casinos. At all the casinos in London the selection of slots is woeful, the drinks aren't free, and the atmosphere is edgy, rather than fun. There are also very low limits on jackpots (10k, the last time I visited, I think) due to the legislation around machine gambling being in such a confused state. Percentage payouts are very low too. Vegas is pretty much a hundred times better! Can't hurt to check things out for yourself but keep your expectations in the right place :)

While you are here, might I suggest Kew Gardens? Magnificent, by comparison.

One final tip: watch out for "compensated" slots - these are NOT random. Google them to find out more.

Have a fun trip, and enjoy the happy exchange rate!

    Dan

As others have said, UK casinos are, frankly, horrible. Regulations state a casino can have a maximum of 20 slot machines, except for super casinos of which only 3 are currently open (Aspers Westfield Stratford, Aspers Milton Keyns and Resorts World Birmingham) that can have up to 150. However, the lack of operators mean that actually you just end up with lots of the same machines
, not 150 different ones. Maximum jackpot is £10,000 except on linked progressives (IGT Fort Knox is the major one) of up to £20,000. To put it in to perspective, at Aspers Westfield around 30 of their 150 machines are Fort Knox!

Yes! The trip was mostly about museums & galleries, so we only hit up one casino in the end, the Hippodrome in Leicester Square. Beautiful building. More impressed with the cocktails than with the slot selection, as some folks here had prepared me for. Had a few good small wins, which we promptly invested in expensive cocktails.

This was the biggest win on a game where a little guy's belly turns into Jackpot reels. If it spells pot, you win. Pretty cute when you're drinking those Darkside things.
