Hi all. I went back and forth a bit on whether I’d do another live TR. I worry that they may be repetitive since we always stay the same place and eat many of the same places, play the same games, etc. But, I know I like all and any TR’s so I decided what the hell, I’ll do one.

Some background on this trip: We were last in Vegas in February, just my husband R and I. Our anniversary and his Bday are May 25 and 27 respectively, and we usually try to plan a trip around that. Due to various issues we ended up booking for June 1-5, and in retrospect, thank goodness for that. We were planning to take our 22 year old nephew/godson with us, everything was booked and we were ready to go.

May 25th we didn’t do anything special for our anniversary because we had plans for a really nice dinner on the 26th with some good friends. Woke up that morning to the phone ringing at 7AM, a niece calling to say that our nephew by marriage (her brother in law) was in the hospital, very ,very ill. The nephew in question is actually R’s niece’s husband, and we were quite close. Basically the same age as us, we had taken trips together to Napa, Key West twice, New Orleans, and visited them at their home in Atlanta. Just a truly good guy. Apparently he had contracted some kind of viral illness, and an hour after the first call, R’s sister, whose son in law he is, called to say he had passed away. To say we were shocked and heartbroken is an understatement. Pretty quickly we cancelled dinner that night, a pool party the next day, and all of our Vegas arrangements, and we spent the next day, R’s birthday, crying and making plans to go to Atlanta for a funeral and to support our niece. It was all a blur and needless to say, no celebration of Bday or anniversary mattered.

A couple weeks after returning from Atlanta, we decided to rebook the trip, as a make up of sorts. So now our dates are July 13th-16th.

I have to give a shout out to Southwest – we were not out one cent when we had to cancel. We used those credits plus a gift card to rebook, and booked rooms at Bally’s, our most common place to stay. Our flight home is very late on Monday, so we went ahead and booked 4 nights comped. Worth the resort fee cost to be able to keep our room until we leave to the airport around 7:30-8PM. Room is a remodeled Resort King, we’ll see about possible upgrades when we get there. Since we’ll be checking in around 11:30PM on a Friday night, I’m not too optimistic but that’s ok.

If you’ve read my previous TR’s, you may remember the hellacious time share thing that R signed us up for back in December. One of the “rewards” of doing that was if we stayed at Hilton in the following 6 months, we’d be reimbursed up to $200. So, we stayed at the Hilton Austin when we were attending a concert in town, and got the giftcard for $200 a few weeks ago. Plan is to use that for our one dinner reservation, for Striphouse at PH, Sunday night.

We have about $100 in credits at Cosmo and about $200 at CET, nothing mind blowing but will cover a couple of meals. No shows planned since it’s a pretty quick trip.

Will hit the bank by tomorrow to sort out the bankroll. We will play on about $300 per person per day, and as usual it will be a lot of VP, some carny games, some slots, and anything else that strikes our fancy. I’m not even going to mention that most coveted VP hand I have never gotten in 22 years, because what’s the point, LOL.

I took Friday off, even though we don’t fly til 9PM, because why not? It’ll give me a chance to buy food for the dogsitter, do some wash and pack at my leisure. R on the other hand is working and will probably come home, throw some clothes in a bag, and then fuss at me when we get there and he realizes he forgot something.

I’ll post a few updates as Friday approaches, and then kick into full gear on Friday.

I know this trip will be fun, but it will also contain many toasts to Matt, who loved a cold beer and loved his family a whole lot. Wish we had had the chance to do Vegas with him at least one time, but he will be there with us in spirit.

I hope it’s ok to share this pic of R and Matt. If not, mods feel free to delete. I know it’s not technically Vegas related.

Wow very sad to hear about Matt, sorry for your loss. Way too young. I hope LV allows you both to embrace the fond memories, spin the wheel a couple of times for Matt, and have time for some fun and relaxation!

    Wishing you much luck.

Thank you! The funny thing is, he was an investment banker and always joked that Vegas didn't have much appeal for him since he already spent 8 hours a day gambling. However he and his wife did go last year for a friend's 50th and they really enjoyed the sights and dining and all that. Thanks to 25+ trips and this great board I was able to give them tons of tips on things to do.

First off....I am so sorry for your loss.

Second: Here's a handy-dandy cut out and keep guide to whether or not you should do a TR.

Am I going to Vegas/A casino in some other locale?
    A: Yes.
    You should do a TR.

Good luck and have fun. Let's put an end to all of this and GET THAT ROYAL!! Hit that and we'll all toast together in memory of Matt.

Or heck, let's just all raise a glass anyway.

Sorry about your tragedy. Yes do a trip report, I love reading them and I am a Ham & enjoy writing them. Are you flying out of Bergstrom? Love Southwest but will fly Allegiant if the $ is substantially better. Enjoy your trip & win win win . We hope to return to Vegas in late Sept early Oct for our anniversary.. Thanks for the pre trip report. Enjoy.

I bet Matt would be glad to know that you and R are taking the time to enjoy another Vegas trip. So enjoy!!
Like Nick said, raise a glass while you are there, to all the wonderful memories and how he graced your lives.

I don't think your TRs are repetitive, I love them all! Good luck to both of you and Find That R____!!!

Here's hoping for a fun trip and that you finally get that elusive hand... So sorry for the circumstances of the trip, but as said above, I'm sure Matt would be happy to see that you are carrying forward and taking a Vegas trip in his honor and memory.... Have fun, good luck, good drinks, and lots of winning hands.... And I too appreciate your Trip Reports!!!!

Thank you. Yes, flying from ABIA. We love Southwest and pretty much use only them for Vegas, tailoring our dates around their dates.
Hope to provide some entertaining updates!

    Getting some things sorted;

Drink coupons and rebate cards from Hilton and our electric company. I generally save things like this for Vegas trips.

Sold a piece of furniture last weekend (not because of Vegas, I’m not that bad of a degen! Because we are trying to sell and move) and the lady paid me with this. Have to break it before Friday to avoid bad juju.

Yes, I’m glad you’re doing a TR! I don’t find them repetitive at all. The experiences build up and we all enjoy each other’s trips, don’t you think? (Except the losing parts)

I hope you have a great trip, remember Matt and the good times you had and get that damn Royal.

Fortunately or unfortunately depending on perspective, I have a pretty busy day packed with meetings, so hopefully it will pass by quickly. Hope to bounce out of here by 4, then home to do a bunch of laundry, give the stinky dog a bath and pack!

You are right, of course, April! Now I just need you to come along and slap my hand down when I go to hit "repeat the bet" when I should be cashing out! :)

Not remotely Vegas related, but we have a couple Birthdays at work today so I brought in famous Round Rock donuts. They are very eggy and have an almost french toast taste to them. Light and yummy.
