So we’ve just returned from a long weekend at the beach, which is MrsDRP’s peace/happy place…. Vegas of course is mine. Tit for tat….although she’s usually a willing Vegas participant as long as I throw in a bribe of some sort of show/concert... We’ve had our reservations since January, the waiting has been torturous, and as it’s now V-4, I’m so excited to get underway that it’s killing me. MrsDRP’s hotel of choice is Paris, which is fine by me as I’m pretty much hotel neutral. Long as I’m in Vegas. We’ll begin our four nights on Friday, hopefully close to on time around 4PM, as our first show is that evening at 8:00. I’m almost exclusively a craps player these days - I used to be pretty much all BlackJack, but the ever tightening house rules (6/5, etc.) have sort of soured me. I play a bit of VP, mostly when my feet get tired at the craps tables. MrsDRP plays mostly slots with some occasional VP thrown. Every so often I talk her into throwing the dice a time or two. MrsDRP is looking forward to some pool time, I’ll tag along some as well. We really aren’t into the nicer food places, so no real pre-planning there, other than that I have a few MyVegas BOGO’s that we may try to use this time. (we scratched Luxor off the list after a not so glowing review by @aprilroncincy)

Tonight is the traditional Vegas Vacation pre-trip viewing....
    IMG_2152[1].JPG

So trip before last, I lost one of my two lucky gold dollars, thus resulting in only half the luck that I’m duly entitled to. Then again, perhaps it wasn’t so lucky if I lost it?? Regardless, I’m seriously thinking of replacing my now one lucky gold dollar with two lucky sea shells, one of which was given to me by MrsDRP our previous beach trip, the other, I found this past weekend. Of course, the more I think about it, the shells obviously weren’t very lucky for the original occupants, since they are deceased….Hmmmmm…Thoughts?

    IMG_2155[1].JPG

    Our itinerary:

Arrive Friday via Southwest around 4PM…..

John Fogerty concert at the Wynn Friday at 8:00 PM….I should add, this was originally “Earth Wind and Fire concert at Planet Hollywood Friday at 8:00PM”, until I found out last week that Fogerty was playing…. Earth, Wind and Fire was one of my carats to tempt MrsDRP, so the switch had to be made delicately :) We saw Fogerty 4 1/2 years ago under not great circumstances, so time to make a new memory.

Saturday – probably a pool day, followed by a U2 Concert at 8:00 PM at TMobile Arena. Hopefully a meet up with @tringlomane and other VF’ers at the unofficial TAG bar VF Farewell, although most likely a little later than scheduled.

Sunday – probably another pool day for MrsDRP, possibly a quick trip downtown for me. I’ve yet to visit El Cortez and I’d like to scratch that off my ‘never done’ list. Sunday evening a Cher concert at The Park Theater. Yes, this was the main carat that got MrsDRP to quickly agree to the trip, I’ll sort of suffer thru all the costume changes on this one. Tit for tat.

Monday – pool or free day…. I have MyVegas tickets for Zumanity, although I’m a little confused….they sent me actual tickets even though all the instructions say that I have to go to the box office to get my actual tickets….we’ll see…..If they don’t work, no big loss.

Tuesday – early AM flight. Back to the real world…

So I have to decide which tennis shoes to take along this trip...I've finally learned that my usual casual shoes don't cut it for all day craps standing and then strip walking... I dont think i ever had more than 2 pair of tennis shoes my whole life, but now that I'm a bit older I seem to have become a hoarder...so the question now....which pair???
    IMG_2153[1].JPG

This will be our first ever flight on Southwest - this whole no assigned seat thing is sorta freaky to me... I'm too much of a tight ass to pay for early check in...boarding is always my worst part of flying.....Advice welcome.

Doubtful there will be a live trip report, my phone is a work one, and it doesn't play well with TapaTalk....we'll see...Four more sleeps!!!

We are all about the nice meals in Vegas. I guess it's our thing. I do serious thinking and pondering before deciding where to eat dinner most nights.

    Lucky orange sea shell!!
And I love the yellow-laces sneakers!
    There, I voted! (whew!)

Be sure to check in for your boarding passes right on the 24 hr dot, and hopefully you get at least the "B" group so that you can find seats together not too far back.

Sounds like a well planned Vegas getaway! May your craps roll last hours, and I hope you both enjoy the concerts. And have fun at the TAG get-together!!

We got the A group once when we checked in right at 24 hours. We were thrilled, then we arrived at the airport to find out there would be only 37 people on the flight. So our A group magic was a bit let down.

I fully expect to be in the B group when we check in on Friday afternoon!

make sure you check in at 24 hours on the dot with southwest, do a mock run before so you have an idea of what to do.

Have your confirmation numbers handy. A few minutes before your time, fill in the form, confirmation number and name. Use the exact name you bought tickets with. When the right minute comes up on the screen hit send.

Then repeat for the second person

I send my boarding pass by text with phone number. Then it is on your phone works on I phone for sure.

I think you are getting off easy with the Cher concert. My "carat" is driving the wife to the Grand Canyon for a day and over night in the middle of our Vegas trip.
We get in Sunday. We are having dinner at BLT on Monday and going to Le Caberet after. Maybe we can run into you fellow Eagle fans for a cocktail.

I'm not sure about the getting off easy part....I took her to see Cher about 10 years ago, it was pretty brutal for me....but at least its only a few hours ... Fellow Eagles fans always Welcome!!!!! Hollar at us, hopefully my phone will let me interact with the board.

Well... I know there are at least 3 (A, B, C), maybe only 3, and lots of people in each group. Nobody wants to be in the last group cause it's mostly middle seats and/or back-of-the-plane by then.

A,B,C and the numbers go 1-60. Typically A1-30 is always empty unless you're early bird or business select I believe.

    Then family, military can board.

    B is usually full.

    Then C

I pick the dark blue ones that will go with much less than the others so you'll have to bring one of the grey pairs too.

I can't wait to post some shoe porn on my trip thread. @IrishDave , you have no idea what is coming. And it's not just my shoes this time...

    1. The shoes. Mrs. P will tell you to always go with the neon option. I would go for the Navy or Gray with just a touch of neon.
    2. Southwest. As said before, always check in right on the 24 hour dot. Even missing by a few minutes can push you to the back of group B. Not great.

SW boarding groups break down as follows:

Pre-boarding: Anyone with a wheelchair, or who needs assistance boarding the plane. Heading to Vegas there are always 4-5 groups of these people. The good news is the FA's choose their seats for them and they rarely give them the exit rows unless there's a serious injury such as a full leg cast.

A 1 - 15: Premier boarding - A-list passengers or people who bought the most expensive fare. (I think SW is calling this business now). These will be the people who primarily get the exit rows. You can buy up to it on day of flight but I wouldn't unless you find yourself in the C group.

A 16 - 60: If you find yourself here you're going to get a pretty good seat, and you're going to have sufficient room in the overhead for your luggage. Most of the slots will be taken by people who purchased early check-in, but in some cases you might get on the tail end of this.

B 1 - 30: Still OK, still can probably grab some seats in the back-half of the plane that are either together, or not a middle.

B 31-60: The further back you are in this group the more dicey starts to get. You can still get two non-middle seats but you're probably looking in the back half of the plane. Think about finding the first available overhead spot you find (in front of your seat.) They will start filling up.

C 1 - 30: Very dicey. You might be able to find a couple of seats together at various locations in the back of the plane but overhead space could be an issue. Again, find the first slot available and shove your bag in it.

C 31-60: Dante's 7th cocentric circle of flight hell. You will be sitting in a middle seat and the chances of you finding overhead space are slim/none. Find the two skinniest people that you can and take the first middle seat between them. Pray that they practice good hygiene and don't drool on you while sleeping. Go ahead and pre-check your bag because there's no way in Hades you're getting that roller board up into the bin absent two gallons of Crisco and a minor miracle.

Enjoy the shows, win big, here's hoping you get an A or early B boarding slot.

As others have said, A, B, C. You really don't want C. I would practice checking in with your info ready. It will just reject you if your early. When I do it on my smartphone when the phone turns to that exact minute, I usually get a low B, a couple of times a high A. You won't get an awesome seat, but you won't have trouble sitting together or anything like that.

Since we are flying frontier this trip, we do the opposite and avoid checking in as long as possible there since that will usually increase our chances of sitting together on that airline.
