We all know people that believe certain things about Vegas that just aren’t true. Even before moving here, I’d have a couple friends that would say some of these things and since moving here, I hear even more of them. A few of the most common ones I hear are:

Vegas is always hot-a lot of people seriously think that temps in Vegas are always 90+ degrees and over 100 for a big portion of the year. They don’t realize that Vegas does have months where it’s cold.

Prostitution is legal-as we know, prostitution is not legal in Clark County, which includes the city of Las Vegas, but there are still people that think it is. My first time here, since I’d never really told anybody that I was into gambling and hadn’t expressed a desire to come to Vegas, some of my friends, and even my parents, asked me if I was coming to get a prostitute. That was awkward especially from my parents. I even know somebody that was here recently, like right before Taylor and I moved here, that got a prostitute and swears that prostitution is legal here just because he didn’t get arrested for it.

Everything is free with just a little gambling-I’ve even seen this one in Facebook groups and different forums. Those free drinks aren’t really free, those free rooms aren’t really free, and if you get free meals, those aren’t really free either. Those comps might save you money on your current trip, but you’ve actually spent a lot more earning those comps that you would spend if you just went to go get a room without a comp, but a meal, or buy a drink at the bar. You can slow play a slot machine so maybe your free drink won’t cost you so much, but a dealer won’t let you slow play a table too much so if you’re at a cold table or a cold slot, that free drink could cost you $100 or even more.

These are just a few of the ones I hear all the time, but I could list a lot more. What are some of the ones that you hear all the time, or might have even believed yourself before you came to Vegas?

Not just cold -- they actually closed schools due to snow/ice back in February! But I think this is probably the most common one. A while back my sister wanted to take her first trip to Vegas around NYE (which itself is a bad idea). I asked her what she was planning to do, and she responded, "Mostly sit by the pool." It took a while to convince her that Vegas gets actual winter. Not as bad as up north, of course, but it averages in the 30s at night in December/January.

My brother was also guilty of this. He took a trip with me the week before Thanksgiving in 2017 and only packed clothes for hot weather. He was fine most of the time during the day, one day was actually cold, but at night he was complaining about how cold it was and actually said, “This shows how bad my luck is. I come to Vegas and it’s the one time it gets cold.”

Is this a misconception that vegas is still control by the mafia?

You would not believe how many people still believe that. Or that it's an "anything-goes" town in general, when in reality the casinos are possibly the most tightly-regulated places in the country.

I always have to correct with everyone that the “casinos pump in oxygen” rumor is and was never true
I tell them if they did that then if someone lit up a cigarette it would explode

They don’t believe me still that it’s not true to the point I don’t argue it anymore

I completely forgot about this one because I hadn’t heard it in awhile. I’ve at least been successful in convincing the people around me that pumping oxygen in doesn’t happen and I did it using the smoking argument. Well, I’ve at least convinced them not to argue with me about it anymore. They might still believe it, but they don’t bring it up around me anymore.

That you can't win in Vegas.
That there are 'hot' and 'cold' machines.
That a machine is 'due to pay out big'.

Also the free drinks thing - so true. It's never really free and it's only worth it if you're gonna gamble anyway.

I know it's a common thought here and one that the reporting confirms by a couple of percentage points, but that Downtown slots pay way better than the Strip.

I've had the total reverse experience and it's been pretty consistent for me.
