    Well, it was mostly an educated guess from visiting around the country. But I was technically wrong because Double STP actually came AFTER Ultimate X, and that's the most popular standalone game made after Ultimate X. Hot Roll is catching up though.

    And because I get bored slash curious about video poker trivia, here are most of the "gimmick" VP games available in descending order of machines available. I don't really expect others to care, but I figure I would post this data from videopoker.com since I bothered to look it up. This also includes popular multigame units like All Star, All Star II, SuperStar, and Five Star.

    * = Standalone games created AFTER Ultimate X (some dates estimated)
    MH = multi hand
    SH = single hand

    Looks like the first one is the number of casinos that have the game and the second is the total number of machines.

    Pretty interesting... amazing how many Ultimate X machines there are (all the All Star II's have it as an option too, right?) compared to every other gimmick, only STP is even remotely close. And are all the 3/5/10 play machines legacies from years ago? Why would you possibly need that many? And how do you end up with so many games with only one or two machines? Did they build an entire custom machine just to test an ultimately unsuccessful game? Looks like they all came out after Ultimate X, so I guess it's probably a "spray and pray" approach to finding the next Ultimate X... then they gave up and just settled on Ultimate X Bonus Streak.

    That's what I was wondering.

    Are they "test concepts" to see if players like them?

    Did they just suck?

    There should be a halfway house type casino for poor abandoned machines.

    there are a couple of "old school" gimmick games as well. these don't require spending an extra coin to achieve the gimmick, instead, they manipulate the paytable drastically to accommodate the gimmick.

    TREASURE CHEST - these seem to be exclusive to boyd properties, downtown and sams town. 5 quarters played, upon hitting a quad you pick a "treasure chest" to determine the number of coins the quad pays. Payouts range from 140 to i think 1,000 coins

    SHOCKWAVE - you can find these on many game king machines around the country. 5 coins played, when you hit a 4 of a kind the machine goes into "shockwave" mode for the next 10 hands. If you hit a quad during those 10 hands you receive a 4,000 coin payout. 2 pair pays even money, however, full houses pay 50 coins. and flushes pay 40 coins.

    Most superstars have STP and Ultimate x too. It's rare to find a casino without STP or Ultimate X. I can only think of one casino that currently has neither game of the 60+ I've visited.

    3/5/10 plays are mostly legacy. Nevada in particular seems to hold on to old VP games a lot.

    Most 1 and 2 machines are games that "died" or are so new they haven't caught on yet. Rack Em Up, I've actually played because the only unit nationwide is at Hollywood STL. But strategy is definitely changed because you're awarded bonus pays for hand conversions. I really wanted to hold three to a royal here, but ya know, math.

    Conversely I'll try "Color Match Royals" for a bit if it's available for nickels at Cosmo. That game is weird though too. You always hold something. Three to a color flush (a hand of the same color) is better than garbage, and you're always dealt at least three of one color. I don't expect that game to catch on though.

    Bellagio hasn't considered changing their VP lineup in years. A lot of MLife hasn't. CET and Cosmo (because Kevin actually cares about VP) is much more up to date.

    St. Louis is another Ultimate X capital. Both casinos nearest have a couple of dozen each. But they still get pretty full on the weekend. Both also have UX Bonus Streak, but it's not catching on that much.

    Yeah, I didn't list those because they weren't on the list maintained at VP.com.

    8/5 Treasure Chest is good because it's "full pay" (99.56% for quarters).

    I would avoid playing Shockwave though unless the full house pays 60 (99.55%, currently at Ellis Island). Or if are lucky enough to find a game that was abandoned in Shockwave Mode, play out the remaining hands. I was shockingly able to do that this year for the first time thanks to my observant gf. I failed to get a quad. :(

    And the real winner is Ernie Moody (videopoker.com) with royalty fees of $15-$20 per DAY for each machine they put into service!

    Thanks tringlomane! That's fascinating information.

    I would never have anticipated the enduring popularity of Ultimate X. It must be a low-returning game for casual players, considering the negative effects of strategy errors and abandoned multipliers.

    I have to wonder if he's making a "strategy error" with those policies. My impression is that the total list above is vastly outnumbered by ordinary IGT "Game King"-type machines with single-line video poker. Seems like videopoker.com could vastly increase its market penetration with more reasonable pricing.
